Q I have read that Chinese water deer can have up to seven young. Is this true?

A That is correct. In fact, out of the six British deer species, only two — roe and Chinese water deer — have multiple births.

While there are record instances of Chinese water deer does having seven young, they are very small and mortality rates are high. They give birth from May to July, after a six to seven-month gestation. They can produce up to seven fawns, but one to three is usual. Up to 40% of fawns die within the first four weeks and they have an estimated lifespan of around six years. CD
