Chapter 1: Bee Keepers Clothing And Equipment
The veil is one of the most important pieces of clothing worn by a beekeeper. Bee stings on the face can be excruciatingly painful, and they can cause damage to the eyes and ears.
If a bee gets inside the veil, remove the bees and walk away from the hives. When you're in the hives, never remove your veil.
To avoid getting hive product on your regular clothes and to protect sensitive areas of your body, wear protective clothing. Avoid wearing dark or rough-textured clothing. Bees can hold on to a rough texture material better than a smooth texture material. Wear coveralls that are white or light in color. Do not wear dark socks if you are not wearing boots. Boots that fasten over or inside the coveralls should be worn. A windbreaker jacket will keep you from getting stung. To keep bees out of your clothes, make sure your pants, veil, and sleeves are securely fastened. If a bee gets into your clothing, squeeze it or walk away from the hives and open up your clothing to allow the bee to escape. Use no sweet-smelling cologne, hair spray, or other products before handling bees. The odor may irritate or attract bees. Gloves should be used with caution. Gloves are useful in bad weather or when moving colonies, but they can impede colony manipulation. Without gloves, you will notice that the bees respond better to a lighter touch.
As a beginner, you should think about how many colonies you want to start with. Two or three colonies is a good starting point because it allows you to compare the two colonies' growth and production.
For a complete hive, you will need the following equipment to
