    Calum’s Army

Calum stood in the middle of the rutted road and watched the stolen herd approach. The redcoats riding alongside the cattle and sheep stared at him in dumb surprise, but kept moving the livestock forward.

A little way in front, away from the dust and the smell, a white-haired man in an English general’s uniform leaned forward in his saddle and rested his forearms on its ornate pommel as he studied the man in the rode with undisguised contempt. He sat up slowly, sighed and raised his hand to halt the men behind him.

You are in my way, he said, and looked Calum up and down. His expression said he didn’t like what he saw. If you are a bandit, you are a bigger fool than you look. And you look like a very big fool.

Calum remained silent, just watching the man through narrowed eyes. This was the man who’d beaten the woman and hanged her husband.

The general looked him over again, stopping for a moment with his eyes on the beautifully crafted smallsword in its scabbard.

Not a bandit, he said, and shook his head once to confirm it, the movement flicking his long white hair into the gentle summer breeze. Then what? He frowned at Calum and tilted his head as he considered it. Then he nodded. A highlander. But what brings you onto my road? He smiled. Of course. You have come to retrieve these animals forfeit to the crown. He laughed and looked back over his shoulder. You see the soldiers here? He leaned forward again and his smile snapped off. I know you. I know your type. Foolish men who think they can become heroes by annoying better men. He pointed at Calum. It is my profession to study an enemy and know a man’s motive and skill at a glance. And what I see is a little man with a sword that is finer than you deserve. I shall take it from your body.

And I know you, Calum said quietly. Your accent is German. He frowned. No, Prussian.

The general sat up sharply and frowned at him. You cannot possibly know this.

You say you study men, Calum said, and took a small step forward. Let me see how well I do at this studying. He put his hand on his chin and looked the general over. Your manner tells me you are used to men doing as you ask. But your uniform is shabby. If you really were a general, it would be from the finest tailor money can buy. He raised an eyebrow. And the English would not put a general in command of this band of brigands stealing what little is left from a broken people.

The general brushed at the creases in his uniform. Continue your foolish guessing, little man. It is the last thing you will do in this world.

Calum smiled. "So, you’re no general, well, not an English one.
