    Calum’s Road

Calum and John rode up on either side of Adriana in the shelter of a stand of windblown trees. John leaned forward and rested his elbows on his saddle pommel to watch the wagon and outriders moving slowly along the rutted road towards Inverness.

There’s a lot of them, he said quietly. Did I say that there’s a lot of them back there? He nodded vaguely in the direction they’d come.

Aye, Calum said, ya did that. He was silent for a while watching the men and horses. And you were right then and you’re right now. There’s a lot of them.

Adriana sat up in her saddle, reached over and touched Calum’s arm. We could hide in the bushes, like now, and shoot them as they go past.

Calum tried not to look at John, but couldn’t help it. John rolled his eyes and looked away.

They’d never see us, Adriana continued, warming to the idea. We could shoot a few, then run away and wait for them further along the road. Then shoot some more.

I don’t know yon men, Calum said, pointing down the hill.

You don’t have to be formally introduced to shoot them.

They’ve done me no wrong. So far.

Adriana glared at him. What about the women? They’re kidnapping the women. Doesn’t that count? Or only if they were men?

Calum smiled and tried again not to look at John. Same result.

What if they don’t know they’re kidnapping the women? Calum said.

How can they not know? Adriana said, her eyes squinting. Perhaps they think they’re taking them to church for a nice sermon.

Calum shook his head. I doubt that. There are churches closer than Inverness.

That’s not what I meant and you know it.

    He did.

What Calum’s saying, John said, before there was violence, is it’s nay right to skulk in the bushes and shoot people without warning.

Adriana turned her squint on him. Then warn them, if it makes you feel better. She clamped her jaw and spoke through clenched teeth. It’s a good plan.

Aye, Calum said, it is that. If I was wanting to murder them.

Murder them? She looked quickly down at the road and lowered her voice. How can it be murder if you’re saving those poor women?

That one there, Calum said, pointing at the road. The young one. He’s got a wife and a bairn waiting for him at home. Shall I shoot him first?

She followed his finger. The young man looked to be barely twenty. How do you know he has a wife and b—child?

    I don’t.

    Then—

But I don’t know he hasna either.

    That’s no argument.

I’m nay arguing. Just saying what could be.

What difference does it make? They’ve taken those women, and he’s with them.

    Aye, it looks that way.

    How else could it look?

Calum watched her flashing eyes for a moment, lost in them, wanting to do as she asked, to please her. But murder?

    "You shot those men
