    Calum’s Agent

Adriana stepped out onto the deck and looked around quickly. There were sailors on deck, but they were leaning on the bulwark, watching the warship rolling on the swell. Awaiting its fate.

She pulled her pistol from her belt and checked that it was primed and ready to go. It was no surprise it was in perfect working order; she was a king’s agent and her survival depended on anticipating the unexpected.

What she was going to do with the pistol, she hadn’t worked out yet. She concentrated on making her way forward. To the guns. She was less than ten feet from the canvas covering the cannon when two sailors stepped out from behind the superstructure and smiled at her.

Where’d you come from, little girl? the one with a gold earring said. And looked her over slowly.

I saw her first, the little one with black teeth said. I get to go first.

She ducked between them and started to raise her pistol towards the powder kegs showing beneath the canvas, but they grabbed her arms and pulled her back. Just as the covers were pulled back off the cannon to reveal the four-man crew waiting for the order to fire. She looked past them at the warship. It was still too far away. At three hundred yards on a pitching deck, the effective range of double-loaded grape was at best fifty yards. And these guns were in the hands of unskilled thieves.

The two sailors pulled her backwards and the gold-earring wearer pawed at her breasts. She pushed her pistol around her side and low, and fired.

    The sailor screamed.

Fire! Adriana shouted. Let them have it!

The gunners, already on edge and excited, did as they were ordered and fired both guns. The charge of grapeshot was intended to act like a big shotgun fired at close range, a wide sweeping hail of lead, but double loaded and out of range, the attack was no more than a loud noise and billowing smoke.

Adriana turned quickly, reversed her pistol and rapped the butt on the brow of the sailor with the rotten teeth. He closed his eyes and took a long nap.

The other sailor was on his knees, sobbing quietly and clutching his groin. She took pity on the man and cracked the butt of her pistol into his temple. Then she crouched behind a hatch cover, looked around slowly and moved back towards the door to the lower deck. She needed to get out of the open in case she was seen, but more importantly because of what was about to happen.

Calum saw the two chase guns fire from the bow of the approaching merchant ship and instinctively ducked, as did everybody else. Nothing happened
