    Calum’s Soul

Should we get away from here? Adriana said. Or wait for the Albino’s men to come and slaughter us.

Calum chuckled. You have a wild imagination, lassie.

So you don’t think they’ll come?

Oh they’ll come, you can count on it.

Then if we’re still here they’ll slaughter us won’t they?

    Calum shrugged. Aye, they’ll try.

Then we should be somewhere else when they come.

First we have to get the bulls to safety. Good men died saving them.

Adriana pointed at the men recovering in the shelter of the cliff. Can’t they do that?

They’re sailors. Calum gave her a gentle smile. And I think they’ve done enough.

Yes, I think they have, she said, and looked around. Then you know about cattle?

Calum laughed. I know about steak. John knows all about cattle.

John gave him a slow look.

I know if we don’t get these animals back to the farmers, a lot of bairns will be without milk, Calum said, ignoring him.

    That’s cows, John said.

    Same thing, Calum said.

Cows give milk, bulls… John shrugged. Make more bulls.

There, I said he knew all about cattle.

    Adriana closed her eyes.

If we start one of them moving, they’ll all follow along, John said.

Then we’ll do that, Calum said, standing up and heading for the bulls still milling around at the top of the beach.

John put his hand on Adrian’s arm as she started to follow. This should be an edification for us.

Calum stopped at the top of the beach and looked around for a moment, picked the big black bull to be leader and crunched through the shingle towards it. It watched him coming without lifting its head.

Shoo, Calum said, waving his arms at it.

It continued to watch him without shooing.

He looked around. What he needed was a stick. He saw a thin driftwood branch in the rocks, picked it up and swished it. It could’ve been made for the job.

    John groaned.

Calum approached the bull and moved off to its right side. The bull turned to keep its head facing him. Calum moved further. The bull followed. Calum was now up the beach and had the high ground advantage. He took a step to his left. The bull moved to its right. Calum quickly stepped right and raised the switch to give the bull a bit of encouragement to begin its journey.

The bull lunged faster than it seemed possible for such a beast and butted Calum’s side, sending him skidding across the loose pebbles. He lost his footing and executed a fine somersault down the beach to land head first at the waters edge with his kilt up over his head and his naked buttocks white
