But Hauptmann Heinrich Schiller stands between him and his objective, and Schiller is a stone killer who thinks nothing of murdering women and children to help his cause. And because he likes it. Regret is a professional soldier but even this hasn’t prepared him for Schiller, a different breed without conscience or boundaries. It is the second time Regret has clashed with this monster, and this time he may not survive.

Season 1: Episode 2 - A 1-hour Bitesize read. The second episode following our hero, Regret, as he and his squad of infantry head for Charleroi to destroy the enemy guns before they can rain their massive shells on the British Expeditionary Force HQ. Behind enemy lines with only a squad, it is a desperate mission, but one that cannot fail or the war will be lost in its first few days. Regret and his squad have survived the slaughter at Mons, but the slightest mistake now and they will all be dead. In his heart, Regret knows this mission is suicidal, but he also knows the cost of failure for his comrades and the war. It is a time of heroism and honour. And of death dealt out by the new killing machines on an industrial scale.

Soldiers - Season 1: Episode 7: Regret's Capture A Bitesize 1-hour read. The lads have been captured by Hauptmann Schiller and face certain execution. Only Regret can save them, but he is pinned down by the enemy squad guarding the train. He must neutralise the guards, destroy the Maxim machinegun and get into the heart of the German headquarters to rescue the lads. Or die trying. He won’t leave them to their fate, no matter what the cost. And the cost is likely to be his life. Schiller is waiting.

Soldiers - Season 1: Episode 6: Regret's Escape Surrounded by the entire German 7th Army, Regret and his squad must find a way to escape the doomed fort, find Big Bertha and destroy it. Without getting killed. It seems the mission is possible, except the ‘Without getting killed’ bit. But Regret will not allow such an awesome weapon to be turned on his regiment as it retreats to the coast. Once again, they go after the huge howitzer, and once again they go up against Hauptmann Heinrich Schiller. And Schiller has time, but for Regret and his lads that’s something that is rapidly running out.

Soldiers - Season 1: Episode 5: Regret's Siege A Bitesize 1-hour read. Our Hero, Regret, and his squad track the deadly Big Bertha to Maubeuge, a small town on the Belgian/French border. It should be a quiet little place, except the German 7th Army and thousands of artillery pieces are besieging the town and its ring of forts. But if they are to destroy the monster-gun they must walk right into the town. Into a death-trap. Now with only 8 men, will Regret after the gun? Against 60,000 enemy troops? No ordinary man could expect to survive. It speaks volumes for our hero that his men are prepared to follow him into this without question. So they wait for his order. And to die.

Soldiers - Season 1: Episode 8: Regret's Train A Bitesize 1-hour read. Schiller train carrying Big Bertha has set off for Paris and the British Expeditionary Force. The huge howitzer can fire 1000 pound high explosive shells from 8 miles out. Regret and his pitifully small band of men race after the gun, determined to prevent it slaughtering their comrades. But Schiller is ready for them - with 400 men and a dozen Maxim machineguns. Regret will not turn away. He has no death wish, but the consequences of failure would be so catastrophic he must do something, regardless of the cost. And the cost is going to be high.

Schiller has finally dropped his delusions of chivalry and honour and is determined to rid himself of the nuisance Britisher once and for all. And sends for a friend to do the job. And that friend has never failed.

Regret and the lads are trapped on the wrong side of the German lines as they advance on the Allied armies making a last, desperate stand at Ypres. To evade the lieutenant colonel’s court martial, Regret must lead the lads into battle again. This time against a battalion that outnumbers them fifty to one. The lads should be celebrating the destruction of Big Bertha, instead they are preparing to die.
