About this ebook

Clan: Season 3, Episode 10. Calum’s Tactics
...Calum and John are racing south to try to reach the young highland conscripts before the Albino’s murderers can ambush them on the road.
Two hundred poorly armed boys against more than three hundred cutthroats to whom killing is just part of their day.

Adriana has the conscripts’ papers so they could just walk away. But there is nowhere to go, with the English cavalry coming down the Edinburgh road to finish them if the Albino fails, and the North Sea blocking their escape east. There is only deadly open ground to Glasgow. Or straight south. Into the Albino’s ambush.

Calum has an audacious plan. In all his years of war this is the most desperate chance he’s ever taken, and one with unthinkable consequences if it fails.
There is no other choice. No other plan. This is all there is.

Live or die. The next twelve hours will decide.

    Calum’s Tactics

Andrew McLintock was nineteen, or at least that was what he told anyone who asked, albeit very few people did. Truth was he would be eighteen on his next birthday, and snow would’ve come and gone before that day.

He was excited to be marching to London, even if the marching was mostly walking along with one of the many groups of highlanders spread out along the road. Those who were used to walking were a long way out in front, while those more used to work needing less travel were bringing up the rear, m’be a mile behind his group. He was first to the top of the long hill, which meant he was leading the column. He pushed out his chest and then glanced around guiltily as he heard his mother telling him what came before a fall. But it felt good to be the leader, even if it was just being first up the hill.

He looked back along the road at his column stretching in dribs and drabs across the valley to the hills bordering the moor and saw two horsemen gallop over the distant hill. He stepped up onto a small mound to give him a better angle to watch them approach. Riders weren’t anything new, he’d seen many on his walk… his march south, but these two were in a big hurry. Pushing their horses like that meant they were going somewhere close by, or they didn’t care if they killed them. He couldn’t imagine anything so urgent it should cost the life of a horse, so he watched them with curiosity and a growing feeling that something was wrong.

Calum slowed his horse as he reached the first of the highlanders, and John fell in behind him as they worked their way through the young men, who watched them pass, giving them curious looks but saying nothing. It wasn’t every day they saw men with muskets across their backs and another tied to their saddles. They meant mischief.

Not dead yet, then, John said.

Aye, m’be God is being less of an arse than usual, Calum said, and pushed his horse to a trot along the open stretch of road to the next group.

Spread out like this is a good thing, John said, coming up alongside him.

Makes no difference, Calum said. D’ya see the weapons these wee laddies have?

John looked down at the ones he was passing. A few had old swords hung on string over their shoulders, but the rest had no more than a dirk stuck in their belts. Aye, those pretend redcoats could put these laddies to the sword without even breaking step.

That’s why we’re here, Calum said.

    "Aye,
