    Calum’s Watcher

Calum let his horse walk and leaned forward to pat its neck. He looked up at John as he came alongside and slowed his mount to a walk. They’d covered twelve miles at a steady trot, and even though their hearts told them to gallop as fast as they could, good sense reminded them that riding was better than walking. Which was where’d they’d be after their horses had died from exhaustion. So they walked for a mile. As much as they could bear.

They were going to be too late, they both knew that. The gallows scum had a half day’s lead on them.

Silky, Bones, and Hangman were in no great hurry; they were away from the Albino and glad of it. These three had earned their names through the execution of their chosen professions. Silky was little and mean and the smoothest pickpocket in the city, and he’d never been caught, right up to the moment he’d got caught. Bones was the opposite of Silky, big, heavily muscled and gentle. Until he was told otherwise, then he broke whatever he was told to break. Hangman was a killer with a very special calling card. His victims took a long time to die, but they were supposed to. That was why he did it. To watch their dance of death while he drank ale and ate bread and cheese.

All three were due to hang, until Lord Eustace Forbin had picked them, and just like that they were pardoned. Now he owned them, but at least they were alive to complain about it.

We gotta kill them all? Silky said. Y’know? Everybody there?

Them was the orders, Hangman said, and looked up from searching his saddlebag for food. You got any bread left?

I ain’t never killed nobody before, Silky said, handing him the end of a stale loaf. Cut some up a bit. He pulled a cut-throat razor from the pocket of his long, tatty coat and flipped it open to show the straight blade. But I ain’t ever topped nobody. He turned to Hangman. What’s it like?

Hangman took a long drink from his water bottle to help with the bread and looked away across the rolling countryside with dreamy eyes. First time you’ll never forget. It’s like you’re God or somethin’ with life yours to take. He looked back at Silky. My first time, I had him standing on the stool, his hands tied and the rope around his neck. His wife runs in, sees it and begs me not to do it. Offers to do anything I want. He grinned to show his missing front tooth. Pretty little thing she was.

    And what?

I accepted her offer, of course. Pretty thing like that. Took her every way. With her man standing there with his eyes on us.

    You let him go, then?

Hangman sniffed. "Kicked the stool out while we was doing
