When he turned to me there was a glint in his eye. It could mean only one thing.

“Sign me up!” I shouted at him, excited.

It made sense now. Why would he propose at the end of a 5km run like his friend Liam had done – he was going to go one better. Anyway, how hard could this adventure race be?

It turns out, it could be very hard. Every weekend, for months, James had me running up and down mountains and cycling muddy roads. Chinese torture didn’t have a patch on this. The love of the outdoors wasn’t what kept me going, but the promise of a shiny ring.
