About this ebook

Clan: Season 3, Episode 8. Calum’s Conscripts
The Dark Woman races to warn Calum that Adriana is working with an English spy and the Albino. If she carries the warning, then Calum’s life will fall apart, but he might still scupper the English plan. If she carries the warning...

Anne tells Calum the clan chiefs have been ordered to send all their young men to Edinburgh to enlist in the king’s army.

Calum and Big John are joined by Adriana as they race to Edinburgh Castle on a desperate mission to save the young highlanders from becoming the English army’s cannon fodder on the battlefields of France.

All they have to do is infiltrate the castle and save the conscripts. Through a thousand English soldiers. Any sane man would be forgiven for walking away. But Calum would never abandon his countrymen and he would never walk away from his duty.

And where he goes, so goes John Mackintosh.

The lives of hundreds of young clansmen are in their hands. And those of the beautiful English agent...

    Calum’s Conscripts

John led the way to a tavern he knew of in the warren of backstreets. A fine alehouse where the sawdust was swept after every fight. He declared it a place for gentlemen as he held the door open and grinned at Calum. He started to enter then stepped back to let one of the gentlemen fall out into the street, sink to his knees and vomit onto the cobbles before struggling to his feet and staggering back inside.

Calum glanced at his friend as he went inside the tavern. Aye, you can always tell a gentleman by the way he throws up.

John slapped him on the shoulder and used the move to hurry him along. Ya have coin, d’ya not?

Calum stopped for a moment to look over his shoulder. So you invited me for food and ale and ya have no means to pay for it?

John steadied a wee man holding four mugs of ale and set him on his way. I invited you, aye, but I didna say I was paying.

Calum fished out a leather purse from the depths of his coat pocket and looked inside. Aye, it would seem I have coin.

Then let’s not stand admiring it, let’s free a table and lighten yon purse. He stepped between tables laden with empty beer mugs to one occupied by two young men who struggled to focus on the newcomers.

John leaned on the table between them. You’ve finished with this table.

The skinny youth sitting on his right squinted at him and tapped his beer mug, sloshing it over the top. Can ya nay see we’re drinking here?

I see you’re spilling most of it. Get away to your beds. Ya mither’ll be worried. He leaned over and lifted the youth by his greasy coat collar.

Hey, will ya put ya hands off Andrew, his friend said, starting to get up, but failing and sitting back down heavily.

Calum stepped past his friend, bent and whispered in the youth’s ear. He jumped and stared in horror at John, climbed to his feet and took Andrew’s shoulder and dragged him away, throwing long looks over his shoulder as he pushed men staggering and swearing out of their way.

John put the youths’ ale on an adjacent table and nodded once at the thanks from the two old men sitting there with empty mugs, and sat down. He waved at the barman and measured a huge mug with his hands, pointing at himself and Calum. Ale on its way, he waited a moment to see if Calum would speak, but got nothing.

What did ya say to the wee laddies to scare them away like that?

Calum shrugged. Is the ale on its way?

Aye, it is. John waited a moment.

Calum chuckled and glanced at him before turning his attention to the fight that had just started in the middle of the room. Men grabbed their drinks and backed off to watch the two
