    Calum’s Capture

Colonel York strolled across the clearing, barely able to conceal his delight with the success of his plan. That being, to wait until Calum wasn’t looking and then capture him. With the help of ten soldiers. Not exactly challenging, but it had worked.

He stood in front of Calum and shook his head in mock pity. You were rich for a moment. He pointed at the payroll coach. Pity. Now you’re just a sad and poor rebel. He looked over his shoulder. What should we do with this sad rebel, men?

Hang him! came the reply from those who could be bothered to play the stupid game.

York shook his head. No, not yet. He reached forward and drew Calum’s sword. I have plans for you. Before I hang you.

    Calum smiled.

York stepped back as if he’d been slapped. He looked back at the men at the edge of the clearing to make sure they were still there and armed, then glared at Calum. He growled and threw a right at Calum’s head.

Calum watched it come and drifted ahead of it to his right, let it glance off his head and folded as if the blow had dropped him.

Calum leaned a little so he could see past the man’s shoulder. John was standing at the side of the coach. And so were two soldiers, with their pistols inches from his head.

John raised his hands and shrugged.

Calum stepped back from York, turned his dirk and threw it into the trees. It was a fine dirk, and he had no desire to see it in the hands of men such as these.

York turned slowly and stroked his throat to make sure it was still intact. Sergeant Keegan. He waited for the sergeant to walk into the clearing. Give this rebel a good thrashing, will you?

The sergeant beamed. I will do that with pleasure, sir. Keegan strode forward, pushing up his sleeves over forearms as thick as tree branches.

I protest, sir! Frampton said, stepping between Calum and the sergeant. This man is my prisoner.

York sighed heavily, lifted Calum’s sword as if it had suddenly become heavy and pressed the point against Frampton’s round stomach. This little man beat you and let you live, he sneered. He is not your prisoner; you were his. He lowered the sword slowly and stopped with its point inches from
