About this ebook

The Duke of Cumberland is marching north through Scotland with 9,000 men, determined to end the rebellion once and for all.

Against these 9,000 rested, trained and well-fed soldiers stand less than 4,000 exhausted and starving highlanders.

Calum and John are also on Drummossie Moor, but they are there for Colonel York, for the final reckoning.

In less than an hour, the heather will be soaked in blood, and only the victors will walk away from the battlefield.

    Calum’s Culloden – Part 2

The Duke of Cumberland leaned over the maps scattered across the table in his headquarters in Aberdeen and looked up slowly at the five senior officers. He turned to Lord Bury. Are we ready, George?

George Keppel was young, no more than twenty-one, but a lord, so a senior officer by default. He nodded once. Yes, my lord. Fifteen regiments of foot are already on the road and marching north. He smiled. Two regiments of dragoons and Kingston’s Light Horse are at Strathbogie, on the road to Inverness. He tapped the map to show where their position was. And three more with General Mordaunt at Oldmeldrum, forty miles north of here. He looked up. Yes, my lord, we are ready. Almost nine thousand men, if you include the Argyllshire Highlanders and other militia.

General Richmond, on his left, chuckled quietly. Yes, George, I think we should include the irregulars. They may well come in handy. He saw Lord Bury’s questioning look. Oh, in case we need… err… shall we say… a frontal assault.

Ah, I see, said Bury. No point squandering the king’s men, eh?

    Quite.

Very good, said Cumberland, looking very pleased with what he’d heard so far. Then, gentlemen, I suggest we take these nine thousand men… He looked at Lord Bury. Including the militia… He flashed a quick smile. And introduce them to the rebels.

Bury returned the smile and began collecting the maps. He was in this war for profit, and so far there’d been very little of that. But when the rebels were crushed, well, there would be cattle and land aplenty. And perhaps some small amount of gold. Yes, perhaps.

Prince Charles stood with his back to the elegant sitting room and looked out of the floor-to-ceiling windows at the grounds of Culloden House that was now his headquarters. His hands were clasped behind his back, giving the impression of the man of the house at ease with his lot. It belied his true feelings as he listened to Lord George Murray, his senior commander, describe the situation.

You’re sure the English are across the river Spey? Charles asked without turning.

Yes, and the brothers Drummond and their Frenchies did little to impede his passage!

Charles suppressed a smile at his commander’s derogatory language. Do not be too hard on Lord Perth and his dear brother. In truth, there was little they could do to stop them, outmanned four to one.

Murray tutted quietly for a moment, looking out of the window
