SOMETHING MISSING

I was delighted when I opened the January issue to see there was an article on walked-up shooting. I am not a great lover of driven game shooting (except boar) so grabbing a nice cup of tea I settled down to read the article.

I was a little disappointed as the point appears to have been missed: the use of an HPR (please excuse the pun). Walked-up shooting is why the HPR evolved and it is the best dog for the job. Ideally, the dog works 20 to 30 yards in front of the Gun to find the scent of the bird. When it catches it and points, the Gun has time to approach the pointing dog and plan the shot before sending the dog in to flush. The dog then retrieves.
