About this ebook

The lilac waters of the ice moon are filled with a false sense of peace. Z and Lord X have remained hidden. There have been no new Horrturn attacks, confirming the belief that the Horrturn Queen can be trusted. Believing all is well, Jeanip finally takes King Enok’s advice and retires, turning his role of Supreme Commander over to Jazee and starts a family with Phameena. He undergoes the necessary operations to rebuild his middle wings so he can care for his newborn son in his birthing pouch. Inspired by the thought of a newborn, Europa and Kiijon decide it is time for them to try for their long hoped for daughter.

This false sense of peace is soon shattered as the lilac waters turn deep purple with blood. An assassination attempt is made on Jeanip in the medical facility. Realizing Z and Lord X are still formidable foes, the monarchs and Jazee search for the identity of Lord X and are determined to find the traitors. But they are well hidden. They attack again, this time going after Mytwindee, Kiijon’s mother, in hopes of drawing the monarchs out from behind the palace’s fortified walls. Their plan works and the monarchs rush to Mytwindee’s defense. Z and Lord X launch a Horrturn assault against the monarchs and the city.

No longer able to deny the fact that Z is somehow controlling the Horrturn, Europa and Kiijon know there is only one way to stop him AND the Horrturn. No weapon in their arsenal can stop these beasts. Only the four Lilac Orbs can. They must be found, returned to their place in the Deep Desert and the lilac veil re-established. But How? Even if the three lost Orbs can be found, the fourth Orb is on Earth with Terrance, three hundred and sixty-five million miles away. With no starship and no portal, how can they possibly retrieve the last Orb? And without it, the monarchs have no hope of saving their people.

P. R. Garcia

P. R. Garcia describes herself as a crazy, not-too-grayed haired old lady. Born during the winter of 1951 in Monroe County, Michigan, the youngest of three children, she attended Western Michigan University, where she majored in zoology. While living in Michigan, she became an award-winning basketweaver, carrying on the tradition of her maternal grandmother, Margaret Dark Feather. In 2008 she moved to southern California and became a volunteer at the Birch Aquarium of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a guide on the Gray whale touring boats. The following year she joined the Whalers, a dedicated group of volunteers from the San Diego Natural History Museum of San Diego, California, whose love of the Pacific cetaceans and other marine life off the shores of California matched her own. As a guide on the Hornblower and Flagship whale-watching boats, she introduced people from around the world to the wonders of the world of the Pacific cetaceans. In 2012 she combined her knowledge of these ocean mammals, her love of science fiction and astronomers’ exciting belief that life exists in the oceans beneath the ice shield of Europa, Jupiter’s ice moon, to create a new trilogy of an alien race from Europa, a race that has lived in our deep oceans for thousands of years. Using legends and known ancient landmarks from Earth’s past, she wove a story of intrigue, mystery, magic and adventure. In 2014 Ms. Garcia added three more books to the story of Europa. In early 2015, she began to tell Europa’s son, Prince Enok’s, story. Now an international bestselling author, Ms. Garcia is currently working on Book 10, which will be about Prince’s EJ’s twin daughters and the search for the destroyed colony on Mars. The Europa Saga may be the first multi-generational science fiction series ever written, spanning five generations of the Waters family. Europa - P. R. Garcia

    DEDICATION

To Jessica and London, my most precious gifts in this life. May their lives be filled with the songs of birds, the warmth of the sun on their face and the twinkling of dreams in their eyes.

To the San Diego Natural History Museum Whalers for their love of the incredible cetaceans and other life that calls the Pacific Ocean their home. And for their dedication to the people of San Diego and the world to see the wonder and importance of these creatures through knowledge, sharing and guidance.

    ACKNOWLEGEMENT

My thanks to D. Williams for her continued dedication to helping me find my errors in grammar and typing. And for her invaluable feedback of the novels. Also to W. Cooley, whose dedication to the written word made this book and the others better novels.

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary volunteers of the San Diego Natural History Museum Whalers Group for their dedication to the cetaceans and other marine life residing in the waters off southern California and northern Mexico. This dedicated group of volunteers work as naturalists on the whale boats during the gray whale migration season in San Diego from late December through mid-April and during blue whale tours during July and August. The knowledge my fellow Whalers have passed on to me was invaluable in writing the EUROPA series.

In addition to the Whalers, I am grateful to the captains of the ship Adventure of the Hornblower Cruises and Events of San Diego for the knowledge they have shared with me concerning the Pacific cetaceans. Their vast knowledge and great love for our oceans’ wildlife is inspiring.

On October 18, 1989, NASA launched the spacecraft Galileo to study Saturn. In February of 1997 on its way to Saturn, Galileo briefly orbited Jupiter and sent back pictures of several of her larger moons, including Europa. The images sent back confirmed the analysis Europa was covered by a layer of thick ice under which may exist a subsurface ocean and contain the three primary ingredients for life (water, heat, and organic compounds). Europa’s waters have the best chance for containing alien life in our solar system. NASA had proposed a mission to determine if life does exist there, known as JIMO (Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter) but the project was cancelled in 2005. However, in May of 2012, ESA (European Space Agency) announced the selection of a new mission known as JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer) and hopes to launch in 2022. It was the possibility of life on Europa that inspired the creation of the Europa trilogy and the books that have followed.

    WINGS

Europa hurried down the hall to the Conference Room on the living quarter’s floor, excitement pumping through her veins. Today was the day they had all been waiting for. Jeanip was getting his artificial middle wings so he could care for his son when he emerged from his egg in about fourteen days. At last, Jeanip and Phameena were going to be parents. Almost three years had passed since the Horrturn princess had been returned to her home, and true to her word, the Horrturn Queen had been able to eliminate the attacks on her people once Z and his followers ran out of Horrturn eggs. Although Z still posed a threat and they had not been able to determine who really had destroyed the western clans or what lord was backing Z, Jeanip finally felt he could let down his guard down a little and raise a family.

Europa carefully opened the door and peeked inside. Come in, Your Majesty, Phameena said.

How is it going? she asked as she floated into the room, looking around and noting the curtain dividing the room.

Very well, I imagine, smiled Phameena. Gardawyn is installing the second wing now. Jeanip asked me to wait out here until both wings were attached. He wants me to be surprised.

That I do, came a voice from the other side of the curtain. A male should be allowed some privacy when having such a delicate procedure. I hope, Your Majesty, you have not brought a flock of spectators with you to view my new additions.

Europa laughed. After all they had been through these past six years, she was surprised that Jeanip still had some modesty with regards to his looks. No, Uncle, it is just me. I knew you would not want a lot of Oonocks here so I asked the others to wait to see you later. Europa swam over and sat down on the couch next to Phameena. How are you feeling today? You only have a few more cycles to wait until your son emerges.

A little tired, Phameena confessed. This guy is very active. He keeps me up most of the night. I don’t remember little Terrance being this active when I carried him in his egg.

That is probably because he takes after his father – Jeanip never is still for very long, Europa smiled, as she outstretched her wing toward Phameena’s bulging stomach. May I?

Of course, Your Majesty, Phameena stated, as she took Europa’s hand and placed it on her abdomen. You should be able to feel him moving right here.

Europa could feel the child moving inside its egg, rolling it around in its mother’s abdomen. Suddenly, she felt a strong kick as the unborn tried to get comfortable in his cramped enclosure. My, he is a strong kicker. Gardawyn, how many days before Jeanip can use his birthing pouches? This little guy feels like he is ready to be hatched today.

If the wings show no problems after two days, I will be able to connect the artificial feeding tubes to Jeanip’s wings and feeding organ, Gardawyn replied from behind the curtain. The feeding tubes will take about a week to completely heal. Barring no complications, Jeanip should be able to nurse and care for his newborn in seven days.

You see no problem in Jeanip being able to nurse his son? Europa asked.

None, Your Majesty, Gardawyn replied. It was only Jeanip’s middle wings that were damaged. Not his feeding organ. Once he began to eat his daily supply of tubree worms, the organ developed as it should and began to prepare itself to nourish the newborn. I have tested the liquid inside and it is acceptable.

    Acceptable? Europa asked concerned.

Probably due to Jeanip’s age, the nutrients contained in the liquid is a little low, but well within acceptable levels. Once we see the line on Phameena’s abdomen appear I will have Jeanip drink some supplements to raise the nutrient levels. I assure you, Your Majesty, there is nothing for you to worry about. Jeanip will have no problems housing or feeding his child. Now if you will excuse me, I need to concentrate on these last few sutures and then you can see the new Jeanip.

Realizing her talking to Gardawyn was distracting him from his medical work, Europa turned her attention back to Phameena. Have you two chosen a name yet? she quietly asked.

We have several we are considering, Phameena said. I like JaJee. Jeanip wants Sunam. He said Sunam was a very special soldier dear to his, yours and Monarch Earon’s heart, that he saved your lives many times and finally sacrificed his own so you three could live.

That he did, Europa softly said, remembering back to that day on the boat when Sunam and Misso flowed back into the Waters of Life. He was someone very special, someone I still greatly miss today. Had it not been for Sunam, none of us would be here. JeffRa would have won and I would be dead.

Phameena could see the sadness appear in her queen’s eyes. Jeanip told me how he and his mate flowed out into the Waters of Life together after both were greatly injured. Very few Oonocks have had the privilege of leaving their world along with their mate.

Their flowing out was the first time I had seen any Oonock do that, Europa stated. I will never forget it. It was so beautiful. I was still human then and knew nothing about the ability to heal the dying. It was not until I almost lost Jeanip that I discovered I could channel the Orb’s powers and heal someone.

An ability I am truly thankful for, Phameena said, wincing from another strong kick inside her abdomen.

As am I, Jeanip said, pulling back the curtain and holding out his wings so that the two females could see his new middle wings with their birthing pouches. So, what do you think, ladies? Am I sexier with or without the new wings?

Oh, Uncle, you are always sexy, Europa said, as she rose up and drifted over to her uncle, giving him a very careful hug. Something I believe Phameena will totally agree with.

The sexiest Oonock I know, Phameena replied, swimming over and lovingly kissing her mate.

Something I am grateful for, Jeanip stated, as he kissed her back.

Gardawyn, these wings are extraordinary, Europa stated as she surveyed the two new wings. I can barely tell they are artificial. I believe you have outdone yourself this time.

I cannot take all the credit, Your Majesty, Gardawyn replied. I had a team of exceptional medical assistants working on developing these wings. Two in particular are geniuses and are responsible for the material the wings are made of. It is actually generated from Jeanip’s own wing cells. Somehow they developed a way to grow our skin into fairly large pieces.

How long will the wings last? Phameena asked.

Since they are made of real skin they should last as long as Jeanip does, Gardawyn remarked. Meaning that, if you two wish, you could have several more children.

I like that idea, Europa commented.

As do I, Phameena smiled and kissed her mate on the cheek.

Let’s see how I do with the first one before we plan on anymore, Jeanip chuckled. Remember, I am no spring chicken like you two but an old, cantankerous soldier. I still can’t believe I was able to fertilize Phameena’s egg. Very few Oonocks of my age have been able to do that.

It is possible that, with all the healings Queen Europa has done to you, she inadvertently corrected any problems in your reproduction organs also Gardawyn explained. You should have no trouble fathering another three or four Oonocks if you like.

Three or four? Jeanip asked in utter surprise.

Gardawyn now turned to address Europa and Phameena. To connect the feeding tubes to his feeding organ will require more extensive surgery than I cannot perform here at the palace. It will be necessary for him to have the operation at the Medical Building and spend the night.

Yes, we anticipated that and have made the necessary arrangements, Europa stated. We have a guard unit already assigned to protect him while he is in the Medical Building. And to calm his fears while he is away, everyone except Phameena, Kiijon and I will remain inside the palace until he returns the next day. We three will be there during the surgery, after which Kiijon and I will return to the palace. I believe Phameena plans to remain there until his release. Is that correct?

Yes, I will remain at his side, Phameena said.

You do know, Your Majesty, there is no need for you and Kiijon to come to the Medical Building, Jeanip stated. I would feel better knowing you are safe inside the palace with Jazee watching over you.

That may be, but I would feel better being there knowing you are okay, Europa said, giving her protector a warm smile. Even minor surgery can be dangerous and I want to be close in case something happens and I need to use my healing powers again. You know, Sweet Uncle, that I cannot allow anything to happen to you. Not now, not ever. Plus, Jazee will have us well protected while we wait to hear from your medical assistants. And I promise, as soon as I know you are okay, I will go immediately back to the palace and wait for your return.

As you wish, Jeanip said smiling. He knew he would not be able to change his niece’s mind about being there during his operation. And a part of him was happy about that. Now let’s get this next part over with. I suppose everyone is either waiting downstairs in the family dining area or up here in my abode waiting to see the new me.

Europa gave him a big smile. You know us too well, Uncle. They are downstairs waiting. We could not all fit in your apartment.

Lordy, how many are waiting? Jeanip asked, appalled at the idea of so many Oonocks fussing over him.

Just family and a few friends, Phameena replied, trying to hide her smile. She knew there were at least forty-five Oonocks waiting downstairs to congratulate Jeanip on his wings and upcoming fatherhood. Besides the family were some commanders, soldiers, friends and lords, including Lord Jun and his mate and Lord Tovak, a rare treat. Even Diiromay and Gassop were downstairs, although Diiromay planned on keeping hidden in the background so as not to upset her brother. Jeanip was loved by many and they all wanted to see his new wings and help him and Phameena celebrate their soon-to-be son.

Europa and Phameena led the way downstairs, each wondering what Jeanip’s reaction would be to the large gathering of Oonocks. It had started out as just immediate family plus Jazee, Sinwee and Doogon. But then others began to hear about Jeanip getting his middle wings and asked to be included in the celebration. Before anyone knew it the celebration of few had turned into a celebration of many. Most requests Europa and Phameena could not deny.

As they swam into the Dining Room Jeanip was shocked to hear many voices shouting Congratulations, Dattwa! Looking around at all the familiar faces, it took every ounce of determination he had not to let the tears in his eyes flow down upon his cheeks.

Seeing the tears, Europa quickly kissed his cheek and wrapped her arms around her uncle. Everyone loves you, Uncle. Everyone wanted to come and celebrate this happy occasion with you. You would not believe how many we had to turn away.

The people love you for the great Oonock you are, Phameena said. Especially the royal family and your soldiers. All know how much you have sacrificed over the years in service to them, and they wanted you to know how excited they are that at last you will get to enjoy the wonders of this life.

I don’t know what to say, Jeanip stated, as he stared in disbelief at everyone.

Then say nothing, My Love, Phameena said. Just float beside me and help me greet our guests.

Doing as instructed and still too emotional to say much, Jeanip glided alongside Phameena as they began to drift down the guests line, shaking each Oonock’s hand as they progressed.

First was Kiijon with Enok. Welcome to the family of fatherhood.

Thank you, Your Majesty, Jeanip said, raising his hand to his forehead and bowing.

    Uncle, play, Enok shouted.

Uncle won’t be able to play with you for a few days, Enok, Kiijon stated. You have to wait until his new wings heal.

Looking pretty snazzy there, Uncle, Earon smiled. If you need any pointers on what to do during those long nights when your son will not go to sleep, just let me know. Oh, and one important piece of advice. NEVER eat berries at night as long as he’s still suckling. Take my word for it. That is one mess you DO NOT want to have to deal with.

I will remember that, chuckled Jeanip.

Congratulations, Uncle, EeRee said, as she held their newest born, Giibold. Terrance sat at her feet playing with his toys, completely indifferent to what was happening around him.

    Thank you, Your Majesty.

Lord Tovak, what an unexpected surprise. Jeanip was delighted to see Phameena’s brother next in line. Surely you didn't come all this way just to see me?

You brought my lost sister back to me, Jeanip, Lord Tovak said, grasping Jeanip’s hand with both of his. The least I could do was come to help you and my sister celebrate your upcoming egg emergence and your new birthing wings. Besides, it has been too long since my last visit.

    How long can you stay?

Unfortunately, just a few days. But I plan on returning in several weeks for a longer stay once your son has hatched.

I look forward to that. Jeanip moved on to Lord Jun and his mate, Lady Abrow. Jun, I should have known you would be here today.

You know me, Jeanip, Lord Jun smiled. I am always hanging around somewhere close to you. I would not want you to start thinking I might be a good guy.

I can assure you that will never happen, Jeanip laughed. Your Ladyship. It has been far too long since these old eyes have had the pleasure of seeing your beautiful face.

That it has, Lady Abrow replied. My warmest congratulations to the both of you. We brought the new unborn monarch a little something. Lady Abrow held out a soft blue blanket made of thousands of tiny Mother-of-Pearl rings. It is a Soothing Blanket for whenever the little one is fussy and cannot go to sleep. The rings sing a soft lullaby that will help put him to sleep.

It is lovely, Your Ladyship, Phameena stated, as she took the blanket. I have heard of these blankets, but I have never had the privilege of seeing one, let alone own one. This is a great gift. Thank you.

You are very welcome. Besides, even though my mate will not admit it, Jeanip is like a brother to him. Jun lost both of his brothers to JeffRa’s revenge; the first during the civil war and the second to the radiation sickness. Lady Abrow turned and lovingly looked at her mate. Jeanip has filled a deep void in my mate’s life, a sorrow I feared would dominate his life forever. But Jeanip somehow filled that void and brought new life back into Jun. She turned to look at Jeanip. For that, Kind Sir, I am humbly grateful and am indebted to you for the rest of my life.

Your mate has given me cause to rise each morning, Jeanip replied. He has given purpose to my life also, for you see, Lady Abrow, I do not trust your mate and therefore am ever vigilant of him. Lady Abrow just smiled. Trust him or not, she knew the two males had a special bond, a bond that united the two together as friends.

Congratulations, Sire, Jazee said, as he smiled broadly. On behalf of the men who served under you we are delighted to see you whole again and are overjoyed at your upcoming fatherhood. I already have a long list of volunteers who wish to be your son’s nanny when one is needed.

Thank the men for me, Jeanip replied, becoming a little misty eyed again. Together, Phameena and Jeanip continued down the line until they arrived at the last Oonock waiting to extend his wishes. Gassop, it is nice to see you, Jeanip said, as he held out his hand.

Diiromay wanted me to extend our congratulations to the two of you, Gassop stated, as two of his children clung to his side. We are very pleased that you are taking the time to enjoy the finer things in life such as fatherhood.

Diiromay did not come with you? Phameena asked, quickly looking at Jeanip to see his reaction to her question. She was delighted to see no disdain this time upon her mate’s face.

She’s over there against the wall with our newborn, Gassop said. She didn’t think Jeanip would want to see her, but she still wanted to come and show him her support.

Against which wall? Jeanip asked, looking around the room.

Over by the new kaaboo tree, Gassop replied.

Without a word, Jeanip floated away towards the female beside the small kaaboo tree. Fearing Jeanip was upset for her coming, Gassop quickly picked up his two children and began to follow him. Phameena stopped him before he could go very far. No, Gassop. Let Jeanip speak to her. She saw the worried look upon Gassop’s face. I assure you, it will be okay. I believe today is the day Jeanip takes his sister back into his heart.

As Jeanip drew closer, Diiromay tried to hide behind the tree fearing Jeanip’s reaction to her presence. It had been five years since that day she told Jeanip the truth about Z being JeffRa’s and her son. Since that day her brother had never spoken a word to her nor acknowledged she even existed. Jeanip reached out and took her hand, brought it to his lips and kissed it.

Diiromay, I can never forget you committed an act of treason against my king and queen when you laid with JeffRa and allowed yourself to become implanted. Nor the fact that you kept that truth from me. But I can forgive you. Diiromay looked up into Jeanip’s eyes, seeing the tears freely flowing from them as they did her own. Who am I to condemn you for loving him? I too fell in love with our enemy and now, thanks to that wonderful, fantastic love, I am going to be blessed with a son. A son, Diiromay. Me, an old, grouchy, by-the-book soldier who never thought he could find true happiness in this world. How can I truly enjoy my new blessing while condemning you for doing the same thing? If it’s not too late, I would like to be your brother once more. That is, if you will have me.

Have you? Diiromay cried. I’ve prayed for nothing else. She rushed forward and hugged her brother, joyful to feel his wings around her once more.

I am so sorry for being stubborn for so long, Jeanip said. I was so angry at you that I couldn’t see past it. I should have put my anger aside that day you stood before the lords and told them Z was your son, and the son of JeffRa. That took real courage.

I know how much honor means to you, My Sweet, Sweet Brother, Diiromay cried. Allowing JeffRa to implant me was an act of treason. I understood that, and never held it against you for hating me.

It wasn’t you I hated, Jeanip confessed. It was the part of me that was so consumed with protecting Medaron that I never saw the pain you were in. I should have realized your love for JeffRa and done something about it.

That’s all behind us now, Diiromay said. And nothing can ever tear us apart again.

As the two released their hold on each other, a huge cheer went up in the room. Europa, Kiijon, Earon and EeRee all swam over and gave the two a big hug. Phameena lovingly kissed her husband. I am so proud of you. She hugged Diiromay and kissed her on the cheek too. It will be so wonderful to have you as a sister at last.

    Same goes here, Diiromay replied.

Kiijon rose up into the water so everyone could see him. Everyone, if I may have your attention, please. To Jeanip, our beloved Commander and to his lovely mate, Phameena. May they continue to love each other and have many more offspring.

To Jeanip and Phameena, the crowd yelled.

Now, if you will all have a seat at the table, we will get this celebration started.

    ASSASSINS

I will see all of you in a few hours, Jeanip stated, as he laid on the operating table and looked at the worried faces around him. I would still feel better, Your Majesties, if you would wait back at the palace where I know you are safe.

Jazee has us well protected here, Europa replied, leaning down and kissing her Uncle’s forehead, trying to hide the worried look on her face. Although not a dangerous operation, she knew any operation had risks, especially at Jeanip’s age. She wanted to be near just in case something went wrong and she needed to heal him. Every precaution has been taken to make sure we and you are safe during your stay. This time, Sweet Uncle, it is my time to worry about you. You just close your eyes and sleep while Gardawyn does his magic on you.

I will watch over her and Phameena for you, Kiijon stated as he stood beside Europa.

Thank you, Jeanip replied. He turned his attention to another male standing beside Phameena. Tovak, I am indebted to you for coming to sit with my mate. Although she is a strong soldier, I know she is worried.

Tovak lightly laid his hand on Jeanip’s wing. As my sister’s mate you are now my brother, so my place is here with you and her. Your child she carries inside her is not only a monarch, but possibly the next ruler of the VeeRay Clan. It is I who is indebted to you, Jeanip, for doing this. If I knew nothing else of Jeanip the Oonock, the love you give to my sister is more than enough to cherish you. As both Queen Europa and King Kiijon have said, we will take good care of her and your child until you rejoin them later.

It’s time, everyone, Gardawyn announced. If you would all wait in the waiting room please.

Make sure his amulet remains around his neck at all times, Europa reminded Gardawyn.

He smiled. I remember your father giving me that same command the first time I met Jeanip lying on my operating table. Threatened to execute anyone who dared remove it. I had assumed that order still existed.

Yes, it does, Europa smiled back. Although I would probably go with imprisonment over death.

Phameena leaned down and gave Jeanip a long kiss. I love you.

As I love you, Jeanip replied. He watched as the four swam out of the room.

Forbee and EeSu will remain on guard inside the room, Jazee stated. I, along with four guards, will remain in the waiting room with your family. Guards are posted at every entrance. There is nothing for you to worry about, Sire, except getting ready to receive your son once he hatches.

Thank y…, Jeanip began to say as he drifted off to sleep, the medication taking affect.

Is he asleep? Phameena asked, as Jazee swam into the waiting room.

He nodded yes and took a seat next to the four. Europa sat beside Kiijon, her hand tenderly held in his. Lord Tovak had his arm around Phameena, keeping her secure and giving her support. I know we have gone over this before, but I want to go over it again one more time. We all know that if Z wanted to take Jeanip out this would be the time to do it. Therefore, no one but the highest security personnel will have any access to Jeanip. Gardawyn will be doing the surgery, which will last approximately four to five hours. He is being assisted by HootTang and Essla, both from Earth, both highly trusted. Forbee and EeSu will remain in the operating room at all times. For added protection, there are two soldiers at the three entrances into the room and twenty spaced out throughout this floor. A military unit patrols the perimeter of the building as well as the roof top. No advance warning was given of this operation so none of the medical personnel are aware it is taking place. All visitors and medical personnel are being stopped at the front entrances and told the building is closed today due to a structure fracture and will not reopen until tomorrow. Once Jeanip is out of surgery and awake, I and my soldiers will escort Queen Europa and King Kiijon back to the palace. Phameena will remain here with Lord Tovak, as will all the remainder of the guards. Two soldiers will be outside Jeanip’s room at all times, as well as three guards inside the room. Once he leaves here tomorrow, the medical building will return to normal.

What of the patients that were here in the building? Kiijon asked. Is there sufficient personnel to care for them?

Yes, Your Majesty, Jazee replied. Those that could be moved were sent over to a temporary medical facility next door. We only had six that were too ill to be moved and needed to remain here. Since we do not know who Z’s followers are, all medical personnel have been sent home or over to the temporary facility. Our own medical soldiers will attend to the six still here. The patients are in good hands.

You have done an excellent job, Europa complimented. Although I wish there had been a way to perform the operation at the palace, I do not believe a snail could get in past your men. Is the hospital room set up back at the palace?

Yes, we converted the main floor Meeting Room into a temporary medical room where Jeanip can recuperate, Jazee replied. And there is a bed in that room just like here for Phameena. Jazee looked over to Jeanip’s mate, seeing the worried look on her face. We will make sure, Phameena, that you are always with him.

Thank you, Jazee, she answered. I know this had added a lot of work onto your soldiers and both Jeanip and I dearly thank you. We owe you much.

Seeing the smile on Jeanip’s face when he holds his son for the first time will be thanks enough for the soldiers, Jazee stated. His troops love him and just want to see him happy.

For the next four hours the group waited, watching for the door to open and for Gardawyn or one of the others to come out and let them know the operation was over. Approximately every twenty-five minutes, Jazee swam over to the observation window and checked inside, ensuring that everything was secured. On the half hour and hour he received an update from the various commanders stationed in and around the building that all was well. Finally, at four hours and sixteen minutes the operating room doors opened and Gardawyn swam out.

He’s doing fine, he announced. Came through with flying colors. No complications whatsoever. We even tested both feeding tubes and were able to get liquid out of the suckling tubes.

That’s wonderful news, Phameena said, as the tears began to roll down her cheeks.

He’ll be in recovery for a little over an hour, Gardawyn continued. Once he’s awake we’ll move him to his room, and then you can all come in and say your goodnights. Phameena, there will be a bed for you in the room also.

Since Phameena will be staying here, Lord Tovak, you are more than welcome to stay overnight at the palace, Kiijon said. I can have the guards bring you over after night meal so you two can eat together.

Thank you, Your Majesty, Lord Tovak replied. If you are sure it is no inconvenience I will take you up on your offer, but my bodyguards are out front waiting for me. They can escort me back to the palace.

I assure you, Lord Tovak, it is no inconvenience, Europa said.

Your bodyguards are welcome to escort you, Your Lordship, but I will also assign a team of my soldiers to assure your safe arrival, Jazee stated. Security is my jurisdiction, and I must make sure you are safe.

Thank you, Jazee, Lord Tovak replied. I welcome your added escort.

Tovak, you can go back with Queen Europa and King Kiijon, Phameena said. You don’t have to stay with me after Jeanip wakes up or have night meal with me.

I am sure Jeanip will be in and out of sleep, Tovak said, taking his sister’s hand and giving her a warm smile. It is no trouble to stay with you and keep you company for a while. As for night meal, is there a way to get something to eat? Jazee did say all the personnel were sent home.

Have it covered, Your Lordship, Europa stated. Doogon and Sinwee packed a nice night meal. Since we did not know how long we would be here, they packed enough for seven people. You and Phameena should have much to choose from.

Before long, Essla came out and announced Jeanip was awake and waiting for them in his room. The group raced down the hall and into his room, surprised to see Jeanip sitting up in his bed.

How are you feeling? Phameena asked as she rushed over to his side, kissing him on the cheek.

Actually, quite well, Jeanip replied, an unusual smile on his face. I feel I could swim to the palace and back in record time.

The drugs haven’t totally worn off yet, Gardawyn chuckled. Right now he’s in a kind of a state of euphoria – very happy and believing he can do anything.

Doesn’t he always think he can do that? Jazee asked.

It is good to see you well, Uncle, Europa said. We will see you tomorrow at the palace. If you need us for anything be sure to send one of the guards.

I will, Jeanip replied, still smiling.

Have a good night, Jeanip, Kiijon said.

I will escort our monarchs home, Jazee stated. Phameena, Kliindeero will be here tomorrow morning and escort you and Jeanip back to the palace when he is ready.

    OK, Phameena replied.

Phameena and Lord Tovak walked Europa and Kiijon down the hallway. They hugged each other goodbye, and Europa once more reiterated that if she was needed for anything at all, not to hesitate to send for her. Jazee gave Lord Tovak some last-minute details and assured him the building would be on tight lockdown. No one would be able to get in or out.

Are you ready, Your Majesties? Jazee asked, motioning his wing forward.

I forgot something, Europa suddenly stated, as she rushed back down the hallway. I forgot to kiss him goodnight. As she turned the corner she was in such a hurry she did not notice the guards were missing from outside the door. As she walked in she saw a male standing over Jeanip with a syringe. Jeanip was trying to fight him but was too weak to hold him off much longer. Kiijon, Jazee, Europa screamed out, as she summoned her strength and released a bolt of energy from her hands, knocking the assailant across the room. Suddenly, someone grabbed her from behind and spun her around. As he did she saw three bodies lying on the floor – Jeanip’s guards. She also noticed that somehow the second assailant had managed to place a bar through the door handles, preventing anyone from entering the room from that direction. There was no way Kiijon or Jazee could come to their defense. It was all up to her.

Europa, Kiijon yelled as he reached the door, unable to open it.

Seeing their way barred, Jazee shouted, Oonocks, break down that door. You three, go around and enter from the other direction.

Where are your guards? Lord Tovak asked.

I don’t know, Jazee stated, as he watched his men begin to pound at the door, trying to break in wondering where the break was in his security.

Europa struggled with her attacker, trying to break his hold as he brought a knife up to her throat. Somehow she managed to free one of her wings and brought it up to protect her neck just as her assailant tried to cut it, instead slicing her arm. She sent out an energy impulse that broke her attacker’s hold and slammed him into the wall. Now free, she swam over to Jeanip and created a force field around the two of them just as the first assailant got back on his feet and rushed her. He hit the field hard and was thrown backwards into the wall and knocked unconscious. Seeing they had lost the advantage of surprise and knowing the guards would break through any minute, the second assailant sped out of the room, leaving his comrade behind to face justice.

Jazee’s Oonock’s managed to break through the door just as the other team came through the other side. Hurry, he went down that hallway, Europa shouted, pointing towards the hallway.

Europa, you’re injured, Kiijon shouted as he rushed over to her, stopping just short of encountering the force field. He could see the water around her arm turning a deep purple. Where’s Gardawyn or Hoot Tang? Europa needs a medical assistant.

I will be okay, Europa replied, as she released the force field and flew into Kiijon’s embrace. The cut is not that deep. I came to give Jeanip a kiss goodnight and found that one over there trying to inject him with something.

Gardawyn floated over and prepared to dress her wound, but while he watched he saw the bleeding stop and the wound close. Then it was simply gone. Once more, Your Majesty, I see your healing powers have made my skills unnecessary. You have healed yourself again. He then swam over and picked up the syringe, studying the liquid inside. I believe this is sea viper poison. Had he even pricked Jeanip with this needle he would be dead now. He’s very lucky.

These three aren’t, Jazee replied, checking the three guards lying on the floor. All three are dead.

How did they get in here? Kiijon demanded, his voice shouting. Where are the other guards?

Sire, there’s four more guards down the hallway, Forbee reported. Only one is alive. We found Essla and Hoot Tang also, unconscious but alive. The assailants must have come down the back hallway and surprised our guards, then disabled Essla and Hoot Tang.

But how did they get in? Lord Tovak asked. You had all the exits and entrances covered.

All commanders and stations report in, Jazee announced over his communicator. I need a second verification on every floor and station. One by one the stations and commanders reported in that everything was okay. Shortly afterwards another soldier called in the confirmation that the first report was correct. Jazee looked at his startled monarchs. There has not been a breach, Your Majesties. That means whomever these two were must have been hidden somewhere in the building before we did the lockdown. He then gave new orders over his communicator. This is Supreme Commander Jazee. We have had a security breach on floor four, Jeanip’s room. Two males. One is down but the second one is loose inside the building. I need him found NOW.

In view of this development, I would like to spend the night here with Phameena, Lord Tovak stated. And unless we are able to move Jeanip back to the palace this instant, I would like my bodyguards brought up here to help stand watch. They have been handpicked by me and I can assure you pose no security risk.

Thank you, Lord Tovak, Europa replied. Jazee, bring up Lord Tovak’s guard.

Right away. I must insist that you two be taken back to the palace right away, Your Majesties, Jazee said, addressing his queen and king. I can no longer guarantee your safety here.

Can Jeanip be moved? Kiijon asked.

No, I would not suggest it, Gardawyn replied. His tissues need time to begin to heal, to reconnect to each other. I fear if we move him now his sutures inside could tear and undue the surgery, thus making the feeding tubes useless. But the moment I feel he can be, I will have him taken to the palace immediately. Plus, if there is an assassin still somewhere in the building, the safest place for him is inside this room.

Go, Your Majesties, Lord Tovak stated. Get back to safety.

Come, Europa, Kiijon said, as he took her hand. There is nothing more we can do here. And little Enok is waiting for us to play with him in the side yard.

Without a word, Europa allowed Kiijon to lead her from the room. This way, Your Majesties, Jazee announced. We are going to exit from the roof and will travel through the upper waters back to the palace. Z’s men may know you are inside the medical building and could be waiting to ambush us from somewhere in the city. By traveling over everything, we will be able to see any attack approaching. We will also be transporting you by speeder with a protection shield. Jazee turned to one of the commanders. Tell Kliindeero to keep an extra-vigilant watch on the security grid. This would be an ideal time to bring in a few Horrturn to attack the city and our monarchs.

Yes, Sir, the commander replied as he hurried off to talk with Kliindeero, who was at the palace monitoring the grid and ensuring the palace and surrounding area was secure.

Europa and Kiijon continued to follow Jazee upwards to the roof. When they arrived they saw the speeder waiting for them along with six other escort speeders. Knowing they could be easy targets in the open, the two monarchs quickly swam into the speeder while Jazee sat down in the pilot’s chair, closed the shield and enacted the protection shield. He then gave the hand signal to rise up into the waters and the seven ships sped off towards the palace.

Europa looked back towards the ever-growing-smaller medical building. Do you think Jeanip will be safe?

Yes, My Love, Kiijon said, wrapping his wings around her. He has almost a whole garrison protecting him. No enemy can get near him and take him from you.

Are you sure, Kiijon? Europa asked, as she looked up into his eyes. We thought he was safe before and had I not gone back to kiss him goodnight, I would have, would have . . . She now cried, unable to contain the fear that had swept through her when she saw the assailant trying to kill her precious protector.

Kiijon hugged her even tighter. He too realized how very close they had come to losing Jeanip. If he had not had the strength to defend himself he would be gone. Do not worry, Europa. Phameena is with him. She will never leave his side until he returns home tomorrow. And heaven help anyone who tried to mess with Jeanip with her on guard.

Or Lord Tovak, Jazee commented. Although he seems very meek and mild, I know that Lord Tovak is a formidable warrior, one that I would not even want to go up against. He has embraced Jeanip as his brother and will therefore fight to the death to protect him. Between him and Phameena, Jeanip could not be in better hands. And the fact that a garrison of trained soldiers are protecting him and the building also helps.

How did they manage it, Jazee? Kiijon asked again. How were they able to get close enough to Jeanip to try to kill him?

I do not know, Your Majesty, Jazee said, a look of worry then determination on his face. But I will by this time tomorrow. Our plan was perfect. There was no room for error, yet they found a way in.

The one thing I have learned is that no plan is unbreakable, Europa softly said, her crying stopped. Jeanip’s defense plan at Minnos was perfect, yet JeffRa found a way to kill Birea, injure Annie and Misso and destroy Minnos. It was only Jeanip’s insistence to have a backup plan for the backup plan that got me safely to Saint’s Isle. She turned towards Jazee. That is what we forgot this time, Jazee – the backup plans. Something I will never forget again. I believe we have become a little too relaxed these past few years while Z has been hidden away. But today showed us he is still a threat and we must always be on our toes. So that something like this can never happen again, I want several of the large rooms in the west wing converted into a medical unit where the most complicated surgeries can take place. Never again will a member of the palace have to be treated at the medical building because the palace does not have the necessary equipment.

As you wish, My Queen, Jazee said, as he sat their speeder down on the top step of the palace stairs inches from the front entrance. You are home, Your Majesties. Both monarchs watched as a procession of soldiers raced out and formed a barricaded corridor into the palace. If you would please exit and go inside where you will be safe.

Europa and Kiijon did as requested, quickly exiting the ship and proceeding down the aisle of soldiers. Once they were inside, the soldiers dispersed back to their assigned guard duties. Europa quickly hurried over to the security grid where Kliindeero was monitoring everything.

Is Jeanip still safe? Europa quickly asked, fearful because she was not there with him but knowing her place was back at the palace.

Yes, Your Highness, Kliindeero smiled. I just spoke with Forbee and he reports everything is fine, as do all the other commanders. Jeanip also confirmed he was okay. Kliindeero paused for a moment looking at the last remnants of injury line on his queen’s arm and neck. I am glad you are okay, Your Highness. I was worried when I heard that thug attacked you. Are you really okay? He didn’t hurt you?

I had a small scratch on my arm, but I am okay now, Europa replied, giving Kliindeero a warm smile, thankful for his concern.

A small scratch? Kiijon shouted. Europa, he almost sliced your arm open to the bone trying to slit your throat. You could have been killed.

Slit your throat? Kliindeero shouted, as he rose up into the waters. "Where is this patoot that I may tear his skin from his body? I will make him tell us where the coward Z hides these days."

The one that attacked Europa got away, Jazee stated as he now entered the palace doorway with the attacker who had been left behind. But luckily he left a present for us – his accomplice.

Kliindeero swam towards the still-shaken Oonock, a look of loathing and extreme hate on his face. How dare you attack my queen, he shouted as he drew nearer. I will make you sorry you were ever born.

Even though her attacker was still in a stupor, Europa could see the look of terror cover his face as Kliindeero drew ever nearer. Kliindeero was a large Oonock, over seven feet tall and very muscular. Even in quiet times he often brought trepidation to those who met him for the first time. And to meet him with such a look of hate on his face had to be completely terrifying. No, Kliindeero. We are a civilized race. We do not torture our prisoners.

Please, Your Majesty, Kliindeero begged. Just let me have ten, no five, minutes with this piece of filth.

Europa swam over to Kliindeero and lovingly placed her hand on his arm. No, my valiant protector. Jazee will interrogate him and see what he can learn. I need you to keep a protective eye on Jeanip for me. I cannot be there so I need you to keep monitoring what is happening so I know he is safe.

As you wish, Your Majesty, Kliindeero replied as he looked down at his small queen. He floated back over to the security grid and resumed his seat.

No sign of any other attackers or Horrturn? Kiijon asked, hoping to take Kliindeero’s mind off of the prisoner as he was led away.

No, Sire, Kliindeero said. The grid did pick up four male Horrturn swimming over the city around the time of the attack, but they did not descend.

Let us hope that is just a coincidence and not a failed attempt to attack the city or medical building, Jazee said, worried about the two incidents occurring at the same time.

Mattwa, Dattwa, came a small voice from across the room as Spinner and Enok entered the room. Spinner had no knowledge of the failed attempt on Jeanip’s life so she had brought Enok down to play in the side yard as she and Europa had previously planned.

There is my big boy, Europa said, moving towards her son who was swimming towards her. When he reached her he wrapped his small wings around her and kissed her lovingly on the face.

    Missed you, Enok said.

I missed you too, Sweetheart, Europa responded. Have you had a good morning with Spinner? Did you eat a good morning and midday meal?

Eat, Enok smiled. Spinner and me play. He removed his wings and swam over to his father, repeating the hugs and kisses. Go outside.

Yes, Enok, we are going to go outside, Kiijon said, looking around. Where’s Kitts?

He was right behind us, Spinner said, as she too looked around for the missing animal. Kitts. Come here boy.

Suddenly, a guard entered the room carrying a squirming Kitts. Here he is, Sire. He tried to attack that prisoner we just brought over from the medical building. Evidently, he likes him about as much as Kliindeero did. Everyone laughed.

Come on, Kitts, Kiijon said. Let’s go outside. Kitts immediately jumped from the guard’s wings, looked in the direction the prisoner had gone, then proceeded over to the royal family, eagerly wagging his tall tail fin. Kliindeero, we will be in the side yard. Please let us know if anything happens. And if you could possibly give us an update on Jeanip every thirty minutes or so I would appreciate it.

Yes, Sire, Kliindeero replied, as he rose and swam over to the monarchs. He handed Kiijon a hand communicator. Take this with you, Sire. I can text you updates every half hour.

Thank you, Europa said, drifting over and kissing the soldier on the cheek. Come, Enok. Let us go play some ball.

Ball, laughed Enok, as he went outside with his parents.

    THE JOUREY HOME

Kiijon and Europa were sitting in their living room enjoying a few moments of peace and quiet. Enok and Kitts were asleep in Enok‘s room and Spinner had retired to her quarters for the evening, giving both monarchs a chance to sit beside each other and read for a short time. It was a rare opportunity that they could find time to read something other than a report. A soft knock at the door interrupted this rare moment.

I am sorry to disturb you, Your Majesty, but I have an update on the assailants, Jazee softly said, in case Europa was asleep.

Come in, Kiijon stated as he opened up the door and gestured Jazee inside.

Upon seeing Europa sitting on the couch Jazee immediately raised his hand to his forehead and bowed. Good evening, Your Majesty.

Good evening, Jazee, Europa replied, as she sat up seeing who was at the door. Is Jeanip alright?

Yes, Jazee quickly replied, suddenly realizing his appearance might be misconstrued as bad news. I have information on the two assailants and thought you would have a better night’s sleep if you knew how they were able to breach our defenses.

Please have a seat, Jazee, Kiijon said, as he took his seat beside Europa again.

Would you like something to eat or drink? Europa asked. Perhaps some coffee?

No thank you, Jazee replied. My visit needs to be a short one so I can continue to plan for Jeanip’s transfer home tomorrow. You will be glad to know the second assailant has been found inside the building. Unfortunately, we did not find him before he injected himself with the sea viper’s venom, thus ending his own life.

That is a shame, Kiijon commented. I would like to have interrogated him also.

As would I, Jazee replied. Beefire was able to determine that neither attacker breached our security. Both were already inside even before Jeanip arrived.

Already inside? Kiijon asked, shocked to hear this news. I thought a sweep of the building was done.

It was, Jazee stated. But apparently the x-ray room has a shielding incorporated into its walls we were not made aware of and makes scanning of that area impossible. The two assailants hid inside there until their opportunity arrived to strike.

Well, that is good news, Jazee, Europa said. And I believe you are right. We will sleep a little better knowing our defenses were sufficient. Were you able to determine from which clan either assailant came from?

    "Not
