P. R. Garcia

P. R. Garcia describes herself as a crazy, not-too-grayed haired old lady. Born during the winter of 1951 in Monroe County, Michigan, the youngest of three children, she attended Western Michigan University, where she majored in zoology. While living in Michigan, she became an award-winning basketweaver, carrying on the tradition of her maternal grandmother, Margaret Dark Feather. In 2008 she moved to southern California and became a volunteer at the Birch Aquarium of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a guide on the Gray whale touring boats. The following year she joined the Whalers, a dedicated group of volunteers from the San Diego Natural History Museum of San Diego, California, whose love of the Pacific cetaceans and other marine life off the shores of California matched her own. As a guide on the Hornblower and Flagship whale-watching boats, she introduced people from around the world to the wonders of the world of the Pacific cetaceans. In 2012 she combined her knowledge of these ocean mammals, her love of science fiction and astronomers’ exciting belief that life exists in the oceans beneath the ice shield of Europa, Jupiter’s ice moon, to create a new trilogy of an alien race from Europa, a race that has lived in our deep oceans for thousands of years. Using legends and known ancient landmarks from Earth’s past, she wove a story of intrigue, mystery, magic and adventure. In 2014 Ms. Garcia added three more books to the story of Europa. In early 2015, she began to tell Europa’s son, Prince Enok’s, story. Now an international bestselling author, Ms. Garcia is currently working on Book 10, which will be about Prince’s EJ’s twin daughters and the search for the destroyed colony on Mars. The Europa Saga may be the first multi-generational science fiction series ever written, spanning five generations of the Waters family. Europa - P. R. Garcia

    DEDICATION

To London, a most precious gift who always brings a smile to my face and great joy to my life.

To the San Diego Natural History Museum Whalers for their love of the incredible cetaceans and other life that calls the Pacific Ocean their home. And for their dedication to the people of San Diego and the world to see the wonder and importance of these creatures through knowledge, sharing and guidance.

    ACKNOWLEGEMENT

I would like to acknowledge the extraordinary volunteers of the San Diego Natural History Museum Whalers Group and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla for their dedication to the cetaceans and other marine life residing in the waters off southern California and northern Mexico. Both organizations have a dedicated group of volunteers who work as naturalists on the whale boats during the gray whale migration season in San Diego from late December through mid-April. The Whalers also accompany the Blue Whale tours during the summer months. The knowledge these two volunteer groups have passed on to me was invaluable in writing the EUROPA series.

On October 18, 1989, NASA launched the spacecraft Galileo to study Saturn. In February of 1997 on its way to Saturn, Galileo briefly orbited Jupiter and sent back pictures of several of her larger moons, including IO, Ganymede and Europa. The images sent back confirmed the analysis Europa was covered by a layer of ice possibly sixty miles thick under which may exist a subsurface ocean. Many scientists believe Europa’s waters contain the three primary ingredients for life (water, heat, and organic compounds) and believe her waters have the best chance for containing alien life in our solar system. NASA had proposed a mission to determine if life does exist there, known as JIMO (Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter), but the project was cancelled in 2005. However, in May of 2012, ESA (European Space Agency) announced the selection of a new mission known as JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer) and hopes to launch in 2022.

A special thanks to D. Williams, W. Cooley and M. Sixtus for their editing.

    FOREWORD

Six thousand years ago, twenty starships of Oonocks fled the lilac waters of Jupiter’s ice moon, Europa. King Enok and Queen Medaron brought three starships to Earth and settled in the Mediterranean. Using their starships, they built a wondrous golden city of advanced technology that became known in history as Atlantis. Over the centuries, the Oonocks lived in the deep ocean and occasionally on land, inspiring many Earthly legends.

Due to a biological weapon that prevented their ability to reproduce, the Oonock race awaited for their end. Unable to return home, their future looked grim. Then one day Queen Medaron discovered she was with child and a new queen would soon be born. To ensure the daughter would live, the unborn was born on land as a human and named after her homeworld, Europa. To protect her, Europa was never told the truth of who she was or where her parents came from. The day after her twentieth birthday, Europa’s mother was assassinated by their thought-to-be-dead enemy, JeffRa, crashing Europa’s fabricated world. With the help of her guardian, her brother and a new friend, Europa is able to defeat JeffRa.

The Oonock race has always been protected by the magical Orbs of Europa and the Ancients. To aid in this protection, the Orbs joined King Enok and Queen Medaron in the Quanundocii, a love so pure, so great, that it can defeat death itself. But Queen Medaron’s death broke the Quanundocii and left the Oonocks vulnerable, creating the necessity for a new Quanundocii. The Orbs change Europa into the Oonock she was always meant to be, and unify her with a male Oonock soldier named Kiijon. Together, the two lovers find a way to bring their people back home to Europa. But the price to save the Oonocks is beyond anything either could have imagined.

EUROPA: The New Monarchs continues Europa and Kiijon’s story as their life on the ice moon begins.

    HOME ON EUROPA

The four young monarchs hurried down the small stairway into the Library along with Jeanip, Swaybuk and Enok. As they reached the portal into FarCore Enok stopped and turned to his daughter. He reached into his pocket and withdrew a large purple sapphire heart, the sign of the Ruling Monarch. He took Europa’s hand and placed the heart in her palm. From this day forward, Europa, you are the Ruling Monarch of your people. I relinquish my ruling powers to you. Rule your people with love and honor.

Europa stared at the purple sapphire, not sure why her father had given it to her. As she raised her eyes to meet his she suddenly understood he was not going into FarCore and to Europa with them. No, Father, she screamed. You have to come with us. You promised you would go into the portal with me.

No, Child, I promised I would go TO the portal with you, not through, he said as his eyes filled with tears. This is where our paths must part. You are now the ruler of your people.

No, I will not allow you to stay behind, she cried as she grabbed onto his shirt holding on tightly.

Europa, I cannot leave your mother behind, he softly said as he fought to control the emotions choking his throat. Your mother now resides on this planet and I must stay here too so I may join with her one day. I cannot, I will not leave her behind.

Europa looked up at her father, tears flowing down her face. We can have the Orbs gather her essence and bring her with us.

We could never get all of her, My Child, Enok smiled. Plus, there is no time. You four have to go now. He nodded to Kiijon to take his mate.

Come, My Love, Kiijon said as he brought Europa into his arms. This is the way it must be.

No, she screamed as Enok pried her fingers from his shirt.

Enok walked over to Earon and EeRee. He took EeRee’s hand in his. Take good care of my son. Have lots of younglings and tell them of their grandfather.

I will, Sire, EeRee said as she cried at the loss of her king. We will tell them of the noblest king and queen to ever have lived.

Earon, no father has ever been prouder of a son than I have been of you, Enok said as he drew his only son into his arms.

No son could be prouder of his father, Earon replied as he hugged his father for the last time, allowing the tears to freely flow from his eyes. I love you so much, Father.

I have and always will love you, Earon, Enok stated. Now go. Be safe and live a good life. Earon reached out and took EeRee’s hand and led her through the portal, turning to take one last look at the greatest king and father he had ever known.

Now it is your turn, Europa, Enok softly said.

But, Father, you will be all alone, Europa cried. I cannot, I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU BEHIND.

I will be at his side always, Chancee said as he walked back through from Europa. Rest assured he will never be alone. The Oonocks who have remained behind will see to that. Terrance and Teerdomay will be part of his life.

Enok turned his tear filled eyes toward Jeanip. Twenty years ago I gave you my family to watch over and care for when I could not be there, Enok said. I now give them to you once more, Jeanip. Protect them, love them and help them be the best monarchs they can be. Now take her to safety and to her people.

Without a word Jeanip stepped toward Europa and Kiijon and also wrapped his arm around her, gently leading her toward the portal. No, she screamed as she broke free and ran into her father’s arms. I will not leave you behind.

Europa, your people need you, he said as he savored her in his arms. You are their one true queen. This is what you were destined to be, what the Orbs planned for your life. You cannot deny your duty because of me. Please, Europa, go and live the life you were meant to live, with the male Oonock who is united to you through the Quanundocii. Heal your race and bring them back to prosperity and happiness. He lifted her face to look directly into her eyes. Do this for me, as my last request as your father and king.

Europa, if your father does not leave now he will not have time to escape, Jeanip said. If you want him and Chancee to live, you and they must go now. Zeevinn and Attwa will be here in minutes. You must go into FarCore and begin your rule over your people.

Enok nodded once more to Kiijon, who walked up and swept her into his arms as her sobbing shook her body. Thank you for everything, Father, he said as he turned with Jeanip and walked with his queen in his arms through the portal.

Suddenly Europa realized Kiijon had carried her inside FarCore. As she watched the portal disappear, she jumped from his arms and ran to the location where the portal had always been. To her horror she saw that it was gone. She frantically began to pound against the rock wall. Father, no, don’t leave me, she cried as she continued to pound upon the rock. Please don’t leave me. Seeing her pounding had no effect upon the wall, she began to scratch at the rock, trying to dig a passage back to Earth. Too consumed with grief she did not see the flesh being torn from her hands nor the blood now flowing down the wall.

Europa stop, Kiijon softly said as he knelt down next to her and took her hands carefully into his own. You can’t get through. The portal is gone. And you’re ripping your hands to shreds.

Europa slid down the wall scraping her arms and wings against the sharp rock, now tearing flesh from them too. She looked up into Kiijon’s eyes, the same eyes that had always brought her such joy. But today there was no joy in seeing his lilac eyes, only anger. You had no right to bring me in here, she screamed. You left him behind, Kiijon. You took my father away from me.

We did what we had to do, Your Majesty, to ensure you both lived, Jeanip replied as Kiijon carefully lifted her bleeding body into his wings. Suddenly, she noticed something on the floor where the portal used to be. As her mind focused she realized sitting on the floor, were the two paintings of the Dumbo octopus her father had left for her. Breaking free from Kiijon she scrambled over to the paintings and pressed them to her chest, crying uncontrollably.

Kiijon once more drew her in his wings trying to comfort her, as he and the others also cried for their lost king. After several moments Europa realized Kiijon was holding her and rudely pushed him away. Get away from me, she screamed. Do not touch me!

With a hurt look upon his face, Kiijon turned to Jeanip. Jeanip, she needs medical attention for these cuts. Can you take her for me?

Without a word, Jeanip transformed back into the soldier who had always protected her, always cared for her. He swam over, removed the pictures from her bloody hands and handed them to Kiijon. He then carefully lifted her into his wings and proceeded through the portal into the cavern that would lead them to Europa. Europa laid her head on Jeanip’s shoulder and wrapped her wings around his neck. Kiijon, EeRee and Earon followed behind, trying to get their sorrow under control, but having little luck.

As they emerged into the cavern they saw Gardawyn, Diiromay and Gassop waiting for them. Diiromay looked around for Enok. Jeanip, where is our king? Where is Enok?

Jeanip could not answer, as he fought to control his tears. He only looked at Diiromay and shook his head negatively. Tears now came to her eyes as she realized Enok had stayed behind and instantly realized he could not leave her sister alone on the planet. He had stayed so that one day he could join with her in the Waters of Life.

Earon turned to Gardawyn and softly said, Gardawyn, Europa is in need of medical attention. Please see to her injuries.

Right away, Your Majesty, Gardawyn said as he swam over to Europa and began to examine her injured wings and torn hands. Jeanip, sit down with her over here on this rock. Gardawyn quickly grabbed his medical kit and brought out bandages, ointment and a syringe. After injecting his queen, he carefully rubbed ointment on the cuts on her wings and hands. Her hands are badly torn. I’ll wrap them for now until we can get her to the palace where I can better treat them.

Thank you, Gardawyn, Jeanip softly said as Kiijon stood there and watched, heartbroken that Europa would not allow him to hold her.

We have speeders waiting to take you five to the palace, Gassop stated. Please follow me and we’ll take you there right away. The five followed Gassop over to the speeders. Jeanip, along with Europa still in his arms, climbed into the first speeder, Earon and EeRee into the second and Kiijon, still carrying the pictures, into the third speeder along with Gardawyn.

Kiijon, what happened? Gardawyn asked as the speeders lifted off. How did Europa cut her hands so badly?

Kiijon just looked at Gardawyn, a look of deep loss on his face. It took him a moment to answer. We knew that Europa would have a hard time dealing with the fact her father was not coming to Europa with her, he began. We thought it best to wait until the actual event to tell her, a fact which I now believe was in error. She reacted vehemently and refused to leave him behind. The Terrians were already in the house and we were running out of time to get her and Enok both to safety; her actions were putting both of them in deadly danger. At Enok’s request, I carried her into FarCore and, once we were inside, the portal from Earth disappeared. When Europa realized the portal was gone she went insane. She began to pound on the rock trying to find the opening, and when that didn’t work she tried to dig through the wall with her fingers, clawing at the stone, determined to find a way back to her father. I tried to stop her, but she could not hear me. Then she saw these, Kiijon said as he looked down at the two Dumbos. I think that when she saw them she finally realized Enok was really gone and there was no way she could get back to him or him to her. I was finally able to hold her and try to comfort her.

Kiijon, you are my king and therefore owe me no explanation, Gardawyn stated. Why is Europa lying in Jeanip’s arms and not yours? What has happened?

In a voice so distraught with hopelessness that it sent shivers down Gardawyn’s spine, he heard Kiijon softly say, Because she hates me for saving her life. Sorrow once again overwhelmed Kiijon as he began to cry uncontrollable, crying for the king and father he had just lost, but mostly for his only love that blamed him for that loss. Gardawyn reached out and placed his hand on Kiijon’s wing, trying to offer him some support and understanding.

    _____________

Your Majesties. How is she? Diiromay asked as she and Gassop walked into the Sitting Room of Europa’s and Kiijon’s habitat, each lifting their hands to their foreheads and bowing. As they looked around the room they saw grave faces upon Kiijon, Jeanip, Earon and EeRee.

Gardawyn is still attending to her wounds, Jeanip replied. We are waiting for him to finish to discover how she is doing.

Your Majesty, the people were hoping to get to meet with Enok to welcome him back and to meet the four of you when you arrived today, Gassop stated as he turned to Kiijon. They need to be told that Enok did not return to them. Something must be decided about the audience so the people can be advised.

Some clan leaders may have some resistance to the idea of Europa and you being the new monarchs, Diiromay stated. They had no qualms about Enok being their king, but with him not here I don’t know how they will react to you and Europa.

Jeanip jumped up, anger replacing the worry on his face. She has the royal purple sapphire Enok gave her, passing on the right to rule. How dare anyone question their right!

Jeanip, you have been gone for six thousand years, Diiromay stated. Our people have endured much.

As has she, Jeanip screamed. As have Kiijon, Earon and EeRee. As have ALL our people. While these leaders were safe hiding beneath Europa’s protective layer of ice, we fought JeffRa and his Terrians for six thousand years. We lost almost all our people, the most important of which was our sister and queen. Of the thirty-two hundred we arrived on the planet with, we brought back just over five hundred. DO NOT tell me about loss and sacrifice. And as for your new queen, Europa, she has lost EVERYTHING! Both parents, her home – not once, but twice – everything she owned and almost everyone she loved. The four of us in this room are her only loved ones that still remain.

Jeanip, the people know none of this, Diiromay stated. That is why an audience is needed, to tell them the truth. She now returned to Kiijon. Your Majesty, what do you want us to tell the people?

Kiijon looked at her, realizing that as the current Ruling Monarch he must begin to make ruling decisions. Enok was no longer there to make them. Putting his sorrow to the side, he stood and began his role as the king of the Oonock people. Europa is too distraught over the loss of her father to be able to meet her people. Plus, we don’t know how much damage was done to her wings and hands; she may need medical time to heal. But I agree with you, Diiromay, the people must be told something. Kiijon thought for a moment, then turned to Jeanip. Jeanip and Earon, since I am new to being a king and making command decisions, I rely upon you two for your suggestions and counseling. I propose for now we simply tell the clan leaders that Enok was not able to return with us and that Europa is currently unable to meet her people as she mourns the loss of her father. What do you two think?

I believe that would be sufficient for the moment, Earon stated. But I would tell them she is injured rather than in mourning. Even in mourning they might expect her to meet with them.

    I agree, Jeanip said.

Make it so, Kiijon responded. Jeanip, I leave the announcement in your capable hands.

Yes, Your Majesty, Jeanip replied, smiling inwardly as he watched Kiijon step into his role of king. Gassop, send word to every clan leader that the palace regrets to inform them that King Enok was not able to return with us to Europa. Inform them Enok has passed on the right to rule to his daughter, Europa, and together with her life’s mate, Kiijon, are the new queen and king. Inform them she is currently healing from injuries she received on the passage here and will meet with them in three days at noon in the Assembly Room of the palace.

Jeanip, I am not sure Europa will be ready in three days, replied Earon. Hell, I do not know if she will be ready in three weeks.

That may be, Your Highness, but three days is all we can give her, Jeanip stated. She is the queen and, as such, must put her personal feelings aside and tend to her people. That is the role of a queen.

Before either Kiijon or Earon could object Gardawyn came down the hall, having concluded his examination of Europa.

How is she? Kiijon quickly asked as he rushed up to Gardawyn.

Luckily there was no damage to her wings, he replied. Most of the injuries were superficial and should heal quickly. But her hands suffered considerable damage. She tore some of the flesh on her fingers almost down to the bone. They may take some time to heal.

Time to heal? Kiijon asked confused. Gardawyn, she miscarried and healed herself within a day. Why isn’t she doing that, why isn’t she healing herself?

I do not know, Your Majesty, Gardawyn replied. I took some tissue and blood samples and will test them to see if anything else is happening to her we are not aware of. Or if the environment here on Europa is somehow preventing her from healing herself. He saw the worried looks on everyone’s faces. But it may just be the fact that she is too distraught, too sorrowful for her body to do whatever it does when she heals herself. If so, once she begins to calm down and accepts the loss of her father her hands may heal immediately.

Let us hope so, EeRee said.

Yes, Gardawyn said, giving her a smile. Suddenly, something about EeRee caught his eye and he swam over to her. Now a concerned look covered his face. Your Majesty, how are you feeling?

A little warm, she replied. Why do you ask?

Without answering, he quickly turned his attention to Diiromay. Diiromay, where is the closest Hut? And do you still have nonquins available?

"The nearest Hut is over by the medical building, about eight tinwigs from here, Diiromay answered, wondering why he needed the information. We have several nonquins who are available when their services are required. Why do you ask?"

Because I believe our young monarch is starting to experience the Hunger, Gardawyn stated.

Why do you say that? Earon asked.

Because she has a string of red in her amulet, Gardawyn responded. As well as a red tinge around her ears. Both are signs of the Hunger. Earon, when was the last time you and EeRee had sex of any kind, Oonock or human?

Last night after the party on the beach. Why

Did either of you notice anything different about the sex or your love-making? Anything at all, no matter how small?

Yes, EeRee said, looking at the strand in her amulet. We both commented how fantastic it was. We thought it was because it was our last night to be together as humans.

Jeanip, we must get these two sequestered immediately, Gardawyn stated. It appears the Hunger began to awaken last night. Luckily it has not grown strong enough yet to infect anyone, but that could change in a matter of minutes.

Gassop, take the majesties to the Hut immediately, Jeanip ordered.

No, Earon said. I cannot go into seclusion. Europa is hurt, some of the clans may be resistant to her rule and Kiijon needs us. I cannot abandon the two of them.

Earon, you are not abandoning them, Jeanip said as he laid his hands upon Earon’s shoulders. You know of the Hunger. You saw it in your sister on the island. It cannot be stopped or cured, but must run its course. EeRee needs you with her to help her fight it. As her mate you have no choice. You must go immediately to the Hut and remain there until the Hunger has been satiated. I will be here to help with Kiijon and Europa. Your place now is to help your life’s mate.

Seeing the truth in Jeanip’s words, he reached over and took EeRee’s hand. Lead the way, Diiromay.

    Yes, Your Majesty, Diiromay replied.

I am sorry I will not be here to help, Earon said to Kiijon as he gave him a hug goodbye. We will be back just as soon as we can.

Just take good care of each other and love one another, Kiijon said as he hugged him back. I’ll see you in about a week or so. And don’t worry. Jeanip and I will take good care of your sister.

    I know you will, Brother.

    VISITING MYTWINDEE

Gassop left to send the palace’s message to the clans while Diiromay took EeRee and Earon to the Hut. After making sure they were secure, she contacted several nonquins to advise them to be on standby. Gardawyn left shortly afterwards, promising to stop by the next day to check on Europa’s injuries and, if possible, to give them an update on EeRee and her Hunger.

Would either of you like anything? Doogon asked as she walked into the room.

I don’t suppose you have any coffee? Jeanip asked, suddenly having a terrible craving for the brew.

No, Jeanip, I am afraid that is one thing we cannot serve here on Europa, Doogon replied, chuckling a little.

I was afraid that would be your answer, Jeanip replied. Have you taken anything to Europa?

Sinwee is fixing her a little something now, she replied.

Would you ask her not to take it up, Jeanip instructed. Tell her to let us know when her tray is ready. Kiijon will be taking it.

Kiijon turned and looked at Jeanip. He waited until Doogon had left the room before saying, Jeanip, I do not think she will want to see me. She made it very clear at the cavern that she had no desire to be in my company.

Jeanip smiled, then look into Kiijon’s eyes. When Medaron was killed and flowed out, Europa had no knowledge of what her mother was. I had no way of explaining to her why there was no body to bury, so I made up the story that we buried her without Europa’s knowledge. Europa had been in a coma due to Medaron’s power transfer for five days, so she believed my tale. She hated me for burying her mother. She ordered me out of her room and refused to come downstairs or talk to me for several days. It was hell. I thought she would hate me for the rest of her life. Earon told me not to give up hope, that she still loved me very much, but was hurting too bad to realize it. He assured me she would come around and forgive me and talk to me again. I didn’t really believe him, but he was right. And you have seen how strong our relationship is now. Kiijon, she will realize you did what you needed to do to ensure hers and Enok’s safety. She will not hate you forever although it will feel like she will. You need to be patient and keep yourself close to her, hopefully even sharing her bed, although I believe you can count on no sex for a while. She loves you more than anything or anyone in this universe, including Enok. Just give her time to remember that. I want you to take her food and drink into her. Mind you, she may throw you out of her room. She may not talk to you. Hell, she may even throw her food at you. Just be there with her and don’t get mad no matter what she does.

If you think it will help, I will do as you ask, Kiijon stated, sorrow clearly written on his face. He wished Enok was there to give him counsel; he always seemed to know the right thing to do when it came to Europa. In his absence he would have to rely on Jeanip’s council.

Sinwee walked into the Sitting Room and announced, Sire, Europa’s tray is ready.

Thank you, Sinwee, Jeanip responded. Kiijon will be right there to get it. He turned to look at his sorrowful monarch. She will probably not be gracious, but this is something that you need to do.

Without a word Kiijon swam into the kitchen and retrieved the tray, then proceeded to their room. He softly knocked on the door and entered seeing the front room was empty. He proceeded to the bedroom where he found Europa laying on the bed, crying. I brought you something to eat, My Love. Europa said nothing and kept her back to him. I’ll just put it here on the table for you. After setting the tray down, he floated over and sat on the edge of the bed. You should try to eat something, Europa. You need to keep up your strength. How are your hands healing? Again there was only silence. Jeanip has scheduled a meeting for us to meet the clan leaders in three days. I know it’s soon, but we must begin ruling our people, Europa. Those clans that remained behind have many questions and want to see who their new queen and king are. Europa again remained silent. I will let you get some rest for now. If you need me for anything please call for me. I love you, Europa, very, very much. Kiijon rose and leaned over, kissing her on top of her head. He longed to pick her up, hold her in his arms, kiss away all the sorrow that now filled her heart, but he feared what her reaction would be. Jeanip said to just let her know he was there for her and that he loved her. Having accomplished that he left their abode in silence and swam back downstairs.

How did it go? Jeanip asked as Kiijon came back into the room hoping for good news.

She never said a word Kiijon replied. She didn’t even acknowledge I was in the room.

Well, at least she didn’t throw you out, Jeanip offered in encouragement. Or the food. Both are good signs.

Kiijon didn’t think they were, but he did not wish to dwell on his mate’s refusal to talk to him. Turning to ruling matters he asked, I believe we need to issue a more detailed statement stating what happened before we meet with the clan leaders. As Diiromay said, those here know nothing of what has transpired. We could stop a lot of speculation by issuing an announcement.

I was pondering that exact idea while you were gone, Jeanip said. Although our announcement that Enok did not return and he passed on his right to rule to his daughter should be enough, I do agree that a more detailed report is needed. The Oonocks who returned from Earth will tell the others what happened, but that could lead to some misconceptions. The only way to ensure the truth is known, especially amongst the clan leaders who could be resistant to yours and Europa’s rule, is to issue a statement.

Please make it so, Kiijon said. I leave the wording in your capable hands, Jeanip.

You do not wish to help me compose it?

If you do not need me, Jeanip, I need to get out of here for a while, Kiijon responded. I thought I would go and see how the relocation of our people is going. I need to do something. I can’t sit here worrying about if and when Europa will speak to me. I thought I might even stop in and see how my mother and family are settling in. I have not seen them since we arrived here.

I think that is an excellent idea, Jeanip stated. I will get the announcement written and have it ready for you to look over when you return. I will have Kliindeero and Jazee accompany you.

I don’t need an escort, Jeanip, Kiijon said smiling at the idea.

Kiijon, you are now the Ruling Monarch, Jeanip stated, a serious look upon his face. That title comes with the reality you cannot go anywhere without an escort ever again. I would prefer to send six or seven guards with you, but I do not want the clans to believe we do not totally trust them.

Do you really think there might be trouble?

As Diiromay said, we have been gone for over six thousand years. One of the clans tried to move into the palace not too long ago. After what we have just gone through, we cannot let our guard down now. While I believe there will be no problems and the clan leaders will accept you two as their sovereigns, we must proceed with caution.

Once again your protection is appreciated, Kiijon replied. Besides, the last thing Europa needs is more stress.

Then if you will wait here, Your Majesty, I will get your escort.

    ______________

How are EeRee and Earon doing? Kiijon asked Diiromay as he and his two guards walked into the office of the Relocation Center. Kiijon noticed there were still a few Oonocks inside waiting for a place to live.

Good day, Your Majesty, Diiromay stated, surprised to see the young monarch outside the palace by himself. She raised her hand to her forehead and bowed. Both are doing well. The Hunger is still small so not much is happening at the moment. It may take several cycles before it reaches its maximum intensity. Right now Gardawyn has both eating and drinking supplements to get their strength up.

Cycles? Kiijon asked. I am not familiar with that term.

A cycle is a measurement of time, Diiromay stated trying to think how to explain the concept. A cycle begins at one bell and ends at the end of eight bells where time resets itself back to one. During this time we rest, eat and live.

On Earth we called it a day, Kiijon said, understanding the concept. Except ours was based on twenty-four bells and the planet’s rotation around the sun.

    Sun? Diiromay questioned.

Something you do not have here due to the ice shield, Kiijon replied, remembering with fondness the beauty and warmth of the solar ball as he and Europa had lay on the beach or sat in the gardens on Saint’s Isle.

Oh. Diiromay noticed the forlorn look at her king’s face. How are you doing, Sire?

As well as can be expected, Kiijon stated as he walked over and looked at the map showing where the new immigrants had been given residence. How is the relocation going? Any problems?

No, Sire, Diiromay responded. There were plenty of vacant abodes for the people to move into. Plus, many still had families here and they took them in or moved them close to themselves. I believe there will be no problems at all. Diiromay paused for a moment, a look of seriousness overshadowing her face. Your Majesty, both Jeanip and Gassop told me of your war with JeffRa and the Terrians and the devastation it took upon our people. JeffRa’s revenge did not really sink in until I saw how few of you there were to find a home for.

Yes, JeffRa’s hate took a heavy toll, most importantly the life of Medaron and the loss of our king, Kiijon replied softly. His revenge still takes its toll on Europa. She has lost so much. I don’t know if she will ever find happiness again.

How is she doing? Gassop asked.

Not good, Kiijon replied. For some reason she still has not been able to heal her hands, but at least her wings are finally starting to heal. She doesn’t eat hardly anything. I knew her adjustment to Europian life would be hard, but the fact Enok stayed behind has made it almost impossible for her to adjust. He looked directly at Diiromay. And I understand there are one or two clan leaders who object to her taking rule.

Ashtim and Leebrock have always been troublemakers, Diiromay said, trying to ease Kiijon’s concerns. I am sure they will come around once they get a chance to meet Europa and you and learn the truth of what happened on Earth. They will not challenge the amulets around your necks nor the purple sapphire heart Europa was given by Enok. The sapphire is the true sign of our leader.

I hope you are right, Diiromay Kiijon replied. I hope you are right. Looking up from the map he asked, Is there anything you need from us, from the palace? Food, soldiers to do work, help moving things?

No, Sire, we have everything we need, Gassop replied.

Then I will leave you to your job of helping our people, Kiijon said, trying to put a smile on his face. Thank you for your excellent work. He turned and left without saying another word, and headed down the path to the building where the map said his mother, brother and sister-in-law had moved to.

    ______________

Your Majesty, what a pleasant surprise, Mytwindee said as she raised her hand to her forehead and bowed.

Kliindeero and Jazee, I am now safely at my mother’s, Kiijon stated as he turned to his two guards. I am no longer in need of your assistance.

Sorry, Your Highness, but we are charged with your protection, Kliindeero replied. Our duty is not over until we return you to the palace. We will wait for you outside.

Spend as much time with your family as you would like, Your Majesty, Jazee said.

Mytwindee thought of asking the guards to come inside, but she saw the look on her son’s face and thought perhaps he needed to talk to her alone. Without a word she followed her son inside.

Are RiTiiyon and Dremora here? Kiijon asked as he sat down.

No, they had an appointment at the medical building to see how the unborn and egg are progressing, she replied.

How is Dremora doing? Kiijon inquired. No side effects due to the transportation into FarCore and trip to Europa?

No, Your Highness, the unborn is doing very well, as is your brother and Dremora.

Kiijon looked at his mother. Mytwindee, when I am here in your home you do not need to call me ‘Your Highness’. Kiijon is fine to address me by. Or Son.

As you wish, Kiijon, Mytwindee said, seeing the tears in her son’s eyes. Now she knew something was wrong. She floated over and sat down beside him and took his hand in hers. She looked into his eyes and asked, My Dearest Son, I can see something terrible is bothering you. What is wrong?

Kiijon looked at the small Oonock female before him, the female who had taken him in and cared for him when his family was killed in the Terrian war. Suddenly a wave of great sorrow and grief overwhelmed him and he began to cry, unable to tell her what was wrong.

Oh my son, what has you so sorrowful? Mytwindee asked as she took the soldier in her arms, holding him close to her heart like she did when he cried over the loss of his family so many centuries before. Tell me what has broken your heart?

It’s Europa, Kiijon finally said in a very small voice. She hates me.

Kiijon, I cannot imagine that is true. You are united in the Quanundocii. That is the strongest form of love there is.

It is true, Little Mother, Kiijon replied. She hates me for taking her away from her father, for leaving Enok behind.

She may be upset with you, but I can assure you, she does not hate you, Kiijon.

    But she does!

Sit up for a moment, Kiijon, Mytwindee said. Let me see your amulet.

My amulet? Kiijon asked as he somehow found the energy to sit up.

Yes, your amulet, Mytwindee said, raising her hand and lifting the amulet around Kiijon’s neck. See, My Son, she still loves you dearly. The color in your amulet is still purple, the sign of the Quanundocii. If she no longer loved you, it would not be purple.

Kiijon took the amulet from his mother’s hand and looked at it intently. It was indeed purple, meaning both Jeanip and his mother were correct – Europa still loved him. He reached out and hugged his mother tightly. Oh thank you, Sweet Little Mother. I have been going crazy thinking I had somehow lost her.

You can never lose her, Kiijon, Mytwindee replied, smiling. Kiijon, was there no way for Enok to come back with her? What happened?

Enok had told me several days before the final conflict that he would not be returning with us, Kiijon said. He said he could not leave Medaron to live an eternity alone on that planet. He said he had to stay so when he flowed out they could be together again. We decided it would be best not to tell Europa this fact until the last minute, which I now see was a mistake. When it was time for us to enter FarCore and she discovered he was staying behind, she grabbed on to him and refused to go. Enok pleaded with her, but she would not listen. The Terrians were already in the house and coming up the stairs. Europa was endangering both her life and her father’s, so I picked her up and carried her into FarCore. Once we were inside the portal disappeared and we had no way back to Earth. When she realized what I had done, she began to claw at the wall, trying to find the portal but to no avail. She turned and looked at me, and her look made by blood turn cold; I had never seen such hate on her face before. I tried to comfort her, but she screamed for me not to touch her. She has not said a word to me since that day.

Oh, Kiijon, I am so sorry, Mytwindee said. But you did what needed to be done in order to save your king and your mate. Right now, she is grieving. Give her some time. She will see you did what you had to do in order to save you all.

That’s the same thing Jeanip said, Kiijon replied.

See, there is hope, Mytwindee stated, smiling. And in the meantime, until she remembers how much she loves you, there is a place to lay your head here anytime you need it. You won’t be the first king to spend a night or two sleeping in my house.

Another king has slept here because of a fight with the queen? Kiijon asked, now totally intrigued by this bit of news. But the only king would be Enok. Kiijon turned to look at this mother. Are you telling me Medaron and Enok fought and either she threw him out of their bedroom or he left on his own and slept here?

Although their fights were very rare, they, like all couples, occasionally had them, usually over something that Medaron did or wanted to do that Enok objected to. Medaron had a temper that was unleashed at times. I remember one particular fight when their screaming at each other was so loud it could be heard over one hundred yards OUTSIDE the palace. Sound carries in water, you know. I don’t remember exactly what their fight was about, but I do remember Enok showing up on our doorstep asking if he could come in. He ended up staying for three days before returning to the palace. Sometimes he could be just as stubborn as Medaron. She smiled remembering back to some good times with Medaron, Enok and her mate, Onwick.

But why would Enok come here? Kiijon asked, confused as to why the king would choose his mother’s residence to retreat to.

Enok and Onwick were longtime friends, Mytwindee announced, surprising Kiijon. Onwick was an explorer like Enok and Jeanip. When Enoquin denied JeffRa his chance to go with Enok on the Jupiter mission, it was Onwick who took his place. Mytwindee paused for a moment, contemplating if she should divulge the next part of her story. Finally deciding there was no harm, she continued. I do not know if you know it, but Enok had not planned on joining with Medaron. He had chosen another and was planning to announce their intention to unite. Medaron had actually planned to join with JeffRa. But Enoquin hated his son so much he wanted to make sure he never would have a happy life. He went behind everyone’s back and made arrangements for Enok and Medaron to join, having the announcement made without anyone’s knowledge.

Europa told me a little bit about Enoquin’s hate for JeffRa, but we never got a chance to really talk about it with everything that was going on at Saint’s Isle and the complex, Kiijon said. She never told me this part of the story.

The female Enok had planned on joining with was Biireena, Mytwindee stated. She was Onwick’s younger sister. She and Enok met while Onwick trained for the Jupiter mission. She had gone to take something to Onwick and literally ran into the future king. Enok was intrigued with her and the two began to see each other. They fell in love and Enok asked for her hand and plans were made for them to join.

But then Enoquin destroyed that future, Kiijon sighed.

That he did, Kiijon, Mytwindee stated. "His actions started us down a path of death and destruction that still continues today after seven thousand years.

    What happened to Biireena?

As you can imagine, she was devastated. Besides having a broken heart, she was embarrassed and humiliated before her family and friends. Enok explained to her, Onwick and their parents how his father had pledged him to Medaron without his knowledge and how sorry he was. Knowing Enok was innocent, Biireena did the noble thing and caused no problems. As a result, Onwick and Enok remained good friends and gave our king the opportunity to have a place of refuge in the future. As for Biireena, she finally met another and had four younglings. Her mate was from the Engineering Clan and she and their younglings went with him in the ship to Mars.

And we now know that JeffRa destroyed Mars before he turned his vengeance to Earth.

Yes. Biireena and her family, along with most of her clan, perished when Mars was destroyed. In fact, the only reason we too were not on Mars was the fact that, at the last minute, Enok needed another navigator for his ship. Onwick took the position and we ended up on Earth instead of Mars.

Kiijon looked at his mother, realizing how close he had come to never meeting her or his brother. Thank the Waters Enok needed Onwick. And now I know where Europa gets her temper – from Medaron.

Mytwindee laughed. Hopefully that temper has calmed down some as it transferred to Europa. Otherwise, I will be sure to keep the door open for you so you will have a place to sleep. Both she and Kiijon laughed. Suddenly, Mytwindee saw Kiijon grimace in pain. Kiijon, are you okay? You look like you are experience some pain.

Nothing to worry about, Little Mother, Kiijon said, trying to put a smile on his face despite the pain that was starting to course through his body. He reached for a small pouch he had tucked under his middle wing and removed two pills from it. After swallowing them he said, Just a little discomfort from the Quanundocii. My body is starting to feel the effects and withdrawal of being away from Europa. The pills will help with the pain until I return home.

I forgot about the pain associated with being separated from the one you are unified with, Mytwindee said. Do the pills help?

Yes. Enok told me it was almost a decade before he could be gone from Medaron for long expanses of time without feeling pain. See, the pain is gone already.

Then, My Son, how about something to eat. RiTiiyon and Dremora should be home shortly. And I am sure your guards outside would love something to eat also.

I should be returning to the palace, Kiijon said. Jeanip and I have work to do and I should check on Europa.

Will you be eating with Europa or by yourself?

Kiijon looked at his mother. More than likely by myself. Or possibly with Jeanip.

Then why not stay at least long enough to eat, Kiijon, Mytwindee suggested. Surely business can wait a few hours. And your pain is currently gone. I know your brother would love to see you.

Kiijon rose and floated over to his mother and took her in his arms. You’ve talked me into it. I will stay for a little while and eat with you three.

    Five. Don’t forget the guards.

I doubt they will join us. Soldiers do not usually eat with royals.

You may be my new king, Kiijon, but you are still my son. That makes you family and soldiers can eat with family, especially when their king gives them an order to.

That is very true, Little Mother, Kiijon said, smiling remembering being king came with certain perks. I will go tell Kliindeero and Jazee that we are staying for night meal and they are to attend. I will also have them inform the palace I will return in several hours. Kiijon swam outside and informed the two guards of their stay and dinner. He saw the big smiles on their faces. One thing he remembered from being a soldier was the special times when some kind family had him sit down for a home meal; they were few and far between. As he turned to go back into the house to help his mother in the kitchen he wondered if Europa would even notice he was gone.

    FADING PURPLE

Your Majesty, Jeanip said as Kiijon floated into the room, raising his hand to his forehead and bowing slightly. Kiijon gave the customary nod and sat down at the kitchen table. How did your visit with your family go?

It was great seeing them, Kiijon replied. RiTiiyon and Dremora were at the medical building when I first arrived, so I had a nice long visit with my mother. When the two returned I got to hear all the latest on the unborn youngling.

I hope the news was good.

Yes, it was. Dremora said the medical assistants said there were no side-effects caused by her journey into FarCore and her exodus to Europa. The youngling is progressing as she should and the egg should be ready to leave the incubation chamber in about three months. RiTiiyon is already getting nervous about taking care of the youngling while her wings develop.

Because of JeffRa’s curse, few Oonocks males your age have ever seen how fathers care for newborns. It is something you will need to learn when you and Europa have your own younglings.

Kiijon turned and looked at Jeanip. Since she still is not talking to me, I don’t think we need to worry about that for now. Do you know, did she eat anything this evening?

Doogon said she ate a little bit of the fish she cooked for her and a few vegetables, Jeanip replied. I am glad you thought of bringing along a few of our heating stones from the complex.

I knew she would have trouble adjusting to the cuisine here, Kiijon responded. Enok actually gave me the idea. Remember, he had the kitchen help cook her food on one when she was at the complex? Kiijon reached down and picked up the announcement sitting on the table in front of Jeanip. Is this the announcement to the clan leaders?

Yes, Jeanip said. If you would look it over and see if you see anything that needs to be added or deleted.

Should we show it to Europa?

I thought perhaps when you retire you could take it with you and see if she will read it, Jeanip stated. As the Supreme Monarch, such announcements should be authorized through her.

Jeanip, it might be better for you to take it to her. She is more likely to talk to you.

That might be, Your Majesty, but the announcement is something you two would normally work on. Therefore, my interaction is not necessitated. Hopefully, it might make her start talking to you again.

I believe it is going to take a bit more than that, Kiijon whispered quietly. He feared he had many more days of silence to endure. Did Gardawyn stop by to check on her hands?

Yes, he arrived shortly after you left, Jeanip replied. He said her hands are slowly healing. He still doesn’t know why she is not healing herself.

I wish Chancee was here, Kiijon stated. He might be able to tell us why her body is not healing itself. Jeanip, what if she cannot heal herself on Europa like she did on Earth? What if it’s not possible here?

I do not know, Your Majesty, Jeanip. Although it seems doubtful, I suppose her ability to heal is an earthly trait. Only time will tell.

For her sake, I hope that is not true, Kiijon commented. She has already lost so much. I don’t know if she could take losing something else. Kiijon rose from the table, taking the announcement with him. This looks good, Jeanip. I will take it up to her and see if she will read it and okay it. I take my leave of you.

Good night, Your Majesty, Jeanip said as he watched the young monarch drift off to the bedroom. Kiijon had wondered how much more Europa could stand to lose; Jeanip wondered how much more Kiijon could bear. He knew Europa’s silence and indifference were tearing Kiijon’s heart apart.

    ____________

Kiijon slowly swam down the hallway and up the incline to his and Europa’s apartment. He looked at the announcement in his hand and wondered if his mate would break her silence to discuss the matter with him. He hoped she would. He missed her so much. He knocked softly on the door and entered. It was silent as he suspected it would be. Next, he proceeded to the bedroom door, knocked and entered. He saw Europa lying on the bed in almost the same position she had been in when he had left her hours before. He looked over at the small table and saw some of the food on the tray was gone, so she had at least gotten up. And Jeanip had said she had eaten some of the food Doogon had brought her earlier.

Europa, I have an announcement to the clan leaders here that I need you to look over, Kiijon said as he swam closer to the bed. Jeanip is going to have it sent to the leaders first thing tomorrow. We need to know if you want to add or delete anything. He waited for her reply, but there was only silence. He drifted over to the other side of the bed and saw her eyes were closed. He could not tell for sure if she was sleeping or not, but he believed not. My Love, it is very important that you look this over. Again, there was no indication she heard what he said. Okay, I’ll just leave it here next to you on the bed while I visit the bathroom. He left to
