Chapter 1: Media Rampage
I walked into Charles’ office, the newspaper clutched tightly in my hands. I dropped the paper on his desk and he looked up at me. We need to break up. I don’t want to expose Amanda to the media spotlight.
Charles looked very calm even though I had basically just broken up with him. Sarah, breathe. We don’t need to break up.
I love this relationship Charles, but I can’t put my daughter in the middle of this.
Keeping Amanda out of the spotlight is a legitimate concern. I wouldn’t want her to be made uncomfortable in any way, or to be cannon fodder for the paparazzi trying to get at me. But we can handle this.
How?
I demanded. Maybe I was being irrational, but after growing up in the spotlight with my parents and their company, I knew first hand that the spotlight can bring horrible people into your life, people who were only interested in your money and status. I didn’t want that for Amanda. I wanted her to have a normal childhood that was untarnished by the closing of her grandparent’s company or who I was dating.
The only way we can battle this is making sure they know that we’re a serious couple, and we’re not just some fling. Once the intrigue dies down they’ll leave us alone.
I hope you’re right.
I am right, I’ve been dealing with this for a long time. I’m only the news until something more interesting comes along.
He wrapped his arms around me. Please don’t worry about anything. I will never let any harm come to you or Amanda.
Charles promised me that he would write a press release about us dating and talk to his lawyers about making sure that Amanda was kept out of everything. We scheduled a lunch date and I left his office, ready to get to work.
At one in the afternoon, I headed back up to Charles’ office where he had lunch ready for us. We chatted about our days and tucked into the food.
So, when do I get to meet Amanda?
I almost choked on my tea. His comment was completely unexpected.
Huh?
Your daughter, Amanda. Since we’re serious, I’d like to meet her. I’d like to let her know how much I care about her mother.
He winked at me and I smiled. I guess it made sense. I loved Charles, but I had always kept him separate from my life with my daughter. I just hadn’t wanted to be one of those mothers who parades men in and out of the house. I wanted my daughter to have as stable of a life
