    A Day in the Life

Do you have to go? my daughter’s tearful blue eyes look up at me as I fold clothes and pack them into a suitcase. My heart clenches.

I do, sweet girl, I kneel down to her level and wrap her tight in my arms.

I wish fervently that I could stay, or take her with me. Unfortunately, this job in Las Vegas would not afford me the time it takes to care for a six year old girl. Of course, I hadn’t told her that I was going for a job. I simply passed it off as a vacation. I always do my dead level best to make sure Madeline never knows just how hard up we are for money. Still, she’s getting older, and she’s already brilliant. I’m afraid it won’t take too long for her to catch on.

How long? I pull back from our embrace.

Just three days, that’s all, I promise, and push a few stray hairs behind her ear. Besides, you won’t even know I’m gone! You and Grandma are going to have a great time here!

I know, Madeline pouts slightly. I just wish I could have a great time with both of you.

I laugh lightly and stand, continuing my packing. I only really need a few more items for my trip. Two evening gowns are already secured in a hanging bag for my performances, and my plain black heels are already packed away in my suitcase. I might have refused the job, since it took me so far away from Madeline. However, they had offered me an inordinate amount of money for a mere two performances.

I will be the opening act for two magic shows at the Venetian Hotel, one on a Friday night, and the other on a Saturday night. They had asked me to prepare two songs of my own choice, as well as a song that would be provided for me, which would of course be about the magic show. I had learned that song in no time at all, as it was very simple and mostly just for the benefit of the show, rather than the quality of its music. It won’t take much for me to really sell it to an audience.

After my opening acts, I will participate as an assistant in the show itself. I had been assured that there would be ample rehearsal time and that I would be placed in absolutely no danger throughout the duration of the show. Still, for the amount I’m being paid, I’m not sure I would mind being placed in harm’s way.

A knock at the door takes me out of my thoughts, and I put down the shirt I’m folding.

Coming! I call out, certain that I’ll be heard outside the door of my small apartment.

I reach the door and turn the handle, opening the door to reveal my mother, a small suitcase at her side.

    Hi there Liza, she smiles.

Hi mama, I fold my arms around her in a tight hug. How are you?

Oh, fine, just fine, she sighs as we pull apart from one another.

My mother is a beautiful woman. She is slightly shorter than I am, as I had gained some height from my father’s side of
