    Chapter 1: Media Rampage

I walked into Charles’ office, the newspaper clutched tightly in my hands. I dropped the paper on his desk and he looked up at me. We need to break up. I don’t want to expose Amanda to the media spotlight.

Charles looked very calm even though I had basically just broken up with him. Sarah, breathe. We don’t need to break up.

I love this relationship Charles, but I can’t put my daughter in the middle of this.

Keeping Amanda out of the spotlight is a legitimate concern. I wouldn’t want her to be made uncomfortable in any way, or to be cannon fodder for the paparazzi trying to get at me. But we can handle this.

How? I demanded. Maybe I was being irrational, but after growing up in the spotlight with my parents and their company, I knew first hand that the spotlight can bring horrible people into your life, people who were only interested in your money and status. I didn’t want that for Amanda. I wanted her to have a normal childhood that was untarnished by the closing of her grandparent’s company or who I was dating.

The only way we can battle this is making sure they know that we’re a serious couple, and we’re not just some fling. Once the intrigue dies down they’ll leave us alone.

    I hope you’re right.

I am right, I’ve been dealing with this for a long time. I’m only the news until something more interesting comes along. He wrapped his arms around me. Please don’t worry about anything. I will never let any harm come to you or Amanda.

Charles promised me that he would write a press release about us dating and talk to his lawyers about making sure that Amanda was kept out of everything. We scheduled a lunch date and I left his office, ready to get to work.

At one in the afternoon, I headed back up to Charles’ office where he had lunch ready for us. We chatted about our days and tucked into the food.

So, when do I get to meet Amanda? I almost choked on my tea. His comment was completely unexpected.

    Huh?

Your daughter, Amanda. Since we’re serious, I’d like to meet her. I’d like to let her know how much I care about her mother. He winked at me and I smiled. I guess it made sense. I loved Charles, but I had always kept him separate from my life with my daughter. I just hadn’t wanted to be one of those mothers who parades men in and out of the house. I wanted my daughter to have as stable of a life as possible, even without her dad around.

    Okay, that makes sense.

He grinned. Of course it does.

I rolled my eyes. I have no doubt that she’ll love you. He smiled and pressed a kiss to my lips.

We set up a dinner date at my apartment. I picked Amanda up from school and we went to the grocery store. Although she wanted to make sandwiches for dinner, so she could help me with everything, I told her that we were expecting an important guest so sandwiches were off the menu. She pouted a little but when I let her pick the ice cream flavor for dessert she cheered back up.

Although Amanda swore she was a great help in the kitchen, tonight she was more of a hindrance than a help. I still managed to get dinner ready, and get us both showered and dressed before the doorbell rang.

Charles arrived right on time. I’ll get it! Amanda yelled. Usually I didn’t let her answer the door, but because I knew who was coming I had told her that it was fine.

    Hello, Mr. Charles!

I could hear her excited voice from the kitchen. I put the plates down and walked to the front door. Hi Charles. He gave me a quick kiss and handed me a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I’ll put these in some water. Amanda, honey, do you want to show Charles around while I set the table?

Amanda nodded and took Charles hand. As they walked through the apartment I could hear her talking a mile a minute. I called them both in to dinner and we sat down. I had cooked chicken and risotto with mixed vegetables. We began to eat and Charles complimented me on the cooking.

About halfway through the dinner Amanda began monopolizing the conversation, talking about the things she did in school and her drawings. And then she dropped a small bomb in the conversation. Do you love my mommy? she asked in the middle of a discussion about the uses of glitter. I almost choked on my drink but Charles looked absolutely calm.

Yes, Amanda. I do love your mommy very much. Amanda nodded, as if she was satisfied with the answer.

But she didn’t stop there. Are you going to be my new daddy?

Amanda! I almost shouted. I was so embarrassed. Charles and I had not had any conversations about marriage and I was internally freaking out that he would run in the other direction if I even brought it up.

Well Amanda, your mom and I haven’t really talked about that yet, but I would certainly like to be a contender for the position.

    What does contender mean?

It’s like, Charles paused for a minute, trying to think of an easy definition that would make sense to a four-year-old. A person who wants to be part of something but they aren’t sure if they are yet.

Oh. Okay. Amanda was silent for a moment, as if mulling over the word in her head. You can be a con-tend-er Mr. Charles.

Charles laughed, a full, hearty laugh that made my insides flip upside down. We finished dinner and Amanda brought out the ice cream. She got a kick out of trying to serve it,
