    JEVON

I check on Jevon every week on Wednesday afternoons. He lives fifty minutes out from my place, in this swish modern apartment. It isn’t tiny. It isn’t huge. It is more than he needs.

    I knocked the door.

HEY JEVON! IT’S ME. OPEN UP!

    I knocked again.

    C’MON. OPEN UP MAN!

It goes on like this for a few minutes. He makes me wait, then opens the door.

Why must we always go through this? I said.

    Hello.

Are you’re going to let me in?

    Come up.

    Thank you.

I followed him upstairs. He moves like an old man. We got to the living room where he sat in his stained, rotten-looking chair. I scanned the room.

"Jesus Christ, Jevon. Look at this place. Do you eat anything other than pizza?

I’m not even going to count how many bottles of vodka you’ve gone through."

Don’t worry, I’ll sort it out.

We know that’s not true. I know where the bin-bags are. I’m on it. I started cleaning up. I’m not one of those clean freaks; I just can’t cope seeing his place in this
