    About the Author

Cheat sheet: The PAWS Healing System

This healing system reduces the impact of any problem by reducing stress.

    STEP ONE: PAWS 1

FIRST PAIN ANGER WORRY SADNESS MEASUREMENT (PAWS Pre-test).

State the problem (Pain, Anger, Worry, or Sadness — PAWS for short, which sounds like exactly what you need to do [pause] when you feel these feelings) out loud & rate your distress about the feelings from 0 (best) to 10 (worst).

Raise your eyebrows 3 times, then smile (even forced — fake it until you make it)!

Deep breath in, and slowly exhale.

    STEP TWO: USE YOUR PAW!

Note: Eyes may be open or closed. This guy likes his eyes closed.

    1. Right palm over right eye, paw-like fingers of right hand (held together) on forehead, and say out loud one thing for which you're deeply grateful right now or in the past

    2. Paw-like right hand on right side of face, say outloud a second thing for which you're deeply grateful right now or in the past.

    3. Paw-like hand over heart, say out loud a third thing for which you expect to be grateful.

Note: This procedure can be very fast (less than a minute!), and both past and future gratitude items can be one word.

    STEP THREE: PAWS2

    SECOND PAWS MEASUREMENT (Post-test)

Deep breath. Rate your distress about the original problem from 0 (best) to 10 (worst).

Continue from Step Two until the PAWS number is zero, or the number stays the same for the three measurements.

The Science of the PAWS Healing System

    • You have physical feelings associated with all of your thoughts. This whole sequence constitutes a pattern interruption. We are working with both positive ideas and positive sensations to interrupt and reshape your neurological patterns around a certain topic.

    • Raising eyebrows (surprise response) and smiling (mirth response) both break negative affective patterns, lower stress and trigger euthymia (good feeling) — which is a reason laughter is therapeutic.

    • Personality and experimental research demonstrates gratitude is incompatible with bad feeling. You cannot be practicing gratitude and feel anger, fear, or sadness at that time.

    • Acupoint tapping research demonstrates stimulating many of these areas causes drops in cortisol, the stress hormone.

    • Dropping cortisol disassociates the connection between thoughts of the problem and the stress of having it (breaking classical conditioning). Much of pain, physical or emotional, is the distress the problem causes. Reduce it, and you reduce the pain. Once distress is unpaired from the thought, the connection is broken permanently until relearned.

    • The PAWS distress reduction routine blocks right visual field, tied to the left brain, which is the language or story part of the brain. It needs to experience change to heal. Blinding the right visual field helps.

    • Touching the right side of the face is associated with being comforted as a child.

    • Putting a hand over the heart stimulates production of oxytocin (calming and bonding hormone). It also is associated with making a pledge or being deeply touched. Essentially this position is pledging to feel better.

    • Combining these effects achieves results that are greater than the sum of the parts.

Here is the script for the demonstration video for you to spread the free healing. It's timed for 60-second Instagram video, several Snapchat snap story segments, etc.

    1. Heal with your paws! Watch me. PAWS stands for Pain, Anger, Worry or Sadness. I’m feeling _____ which I rate as a [0-10] out of 10.

    2. Raise eyebrows 3x & smile

    3. Perform the PAWS technique.

    a. Grateful for ____, while right hand over
