    About the Author

    Interview for an Heir

It all started because I needed a damn job. I’d been busting my ass ever since I graduated from a college that promised one hundred percent job placement in administrative assistance, but had fallen flat. It served me right for thinking a college that advertised during Maury was anything but a scam, but I’d been unable to find work and I was desperate.

But now I had a whole mess of debt to add to my unemployment and I was running out of ideas.

Every single job posting for any office job that came up, I applied. I was sending out fifty resumes a day, I was volunteering to move anywhere, take any pay, do anything, but the best I got was a trial as an unpaid intern that led nowhere and just gave me more debt to wade through.

So there I was, twenty-two, single, barely making rent with the only job I could find – working part-time selling clothes to white teenage girls with too much money, and debt collectors calling me every single day.

There were two big things working against me. Number one was my ‘college’ diploma. I’d learned very quickly that having the name of my school on my resume was a big red X for most employers. Second was because I was black.

Everyone would cry equal opportunity, but I saw the way the people who interviewed me looked at me. The color of my skin, my natural, kinky hair, it all worked against me and I never got any calls back, save the occasional one letting me know they’d gone with someone
