An Unexpected Heir by Jazmine Bryant

Getting ready for work that morning was the hardest thing I’d probably ever had to do. I’d done something really foolish, and I couldn’t help myself, either.

God damn it, things had been going so well at work, too! Three months in, I was finished with my probationary period and proving everyone wrong. I was damn good at my job and just because I’d grown up in Compton didn’t mean I was some ghetto bitch who couldn’t do the work.

I’d left Compton behind years ago, fighting my way through school and even college. Sure, it was a two year community college, but it was enough to get me a job working for Everett Myers, one of the partners in a firm that was behind abut thirty percent of the new developments in San Francisco over the last five years.

While San Francisco had a reputation as a forgiving town, one that accepted all types, that wasn’t exactly what I found once I moved there. The whole city was so expensive that I was barely getting by, and now I was worried that I was about to lose the job I’d worked for my whole life.

I knew better, damn it! I wasn’t that girl, some triflin’ ho who was willing to sleep her way to the top, but now that’s how I looked. No matter how wealthy, no matter how mature my boss seemed, men were all the same. He’d be bragging to everyone who would listen how he’d banged the hot black woman at the office summer party and I would be the office slut.

The day had started out so well. It was one of the things I loved about my new company – all the perks. We have quarterly parties that were paid for by the president – Mr. Myers himself. After a half day of work, the booze would come out, the food would get delivered, and we’d get to blow off some steam.

It was my first one of these parties, but everyone was happy to tell me just how much fun I would be having. That was another thing I loved about my office – despite the fact that I was the only black woman there, no one treated me any different. Back home, there was a strict segregation, especially in school. At work it was different and while when the word ‘Compton’ would get mentioned I would get some bitchy looks, most people didn’t care that I was black.

But now I’d given them a reason to care. They would think I was no more than a stereotype of where I’d come from and all my hard work would be ruined. At twenty-two, I would lose my job and in a city as expensive as San Francisco, I’d have no choice but to move home to my mama.

I’d told myself over and over not to drink too much at the party. Just take it slow, only have some wine, and never get more than a buzz. I was especially sure to repeat that to myself when I realized that Mr. Myers himself attended the parties. One word from him could ruin my career not just at his firm, but any of them. I couldn’t let him think that I was some drunk ass bitch while I was at work.

What I hadn’t been prepared for was how my coworkers wanted to get me wasted since I was the new girl. Things like It’s tradition were thrown around and before I knew it, I was being handed tequila shots.

I’d always been able to handle my liquor. I prided myself on it. When I went to the clubs with my girls back home, I was always the one who was left in charge. The mama of my crew. Everyone knew I could handle my shit.

But that night was different. Maybe it was the tequila, maybe it was the wine, I had no clue, but after a few hours I was vaguely aware of how smashed I really was.

And I’d also become aware of how attractive my boss was.

Of course it wasn’t the first time I’d noticed him. Right from my first interview with him, I knew
