    About the Author

    Work Retreat

Ever since I got the job at Carver & Mills, I’ve stood out. I was the only black woman in the office of one hundred employees, and that was just at our location. I tried not to mind that people talked to me just a little differently, white guilt I guess, but I was tired of walking on eggshells with people. I wanted to be included.

I don’t mean camping with an RV and all the luxuries, I mean real camping. Fishing, hiking, sleeping in tents, the whole deal. It would get us all out and active and would give us time to bond as more than just coworkers.

We were going to go on the first weekend in June, right as our company took a slow downturn. I was told we were getting split into random groups of four, two people to a tent and it would be a race to the top of the mountain with a scavenger hunt. Even better, even the bosses
