Chapter 1: Robin

I never doubted for a minute that I’m the father, Edward said gazing at Karen, his blue eyes soft, caring, and alive. He tightened his hand around mine and his wonderful smile broadened. Well I thought that had shut her up. But Karen isn’t that easy to quiet. I’m looking at her, my eyes saying, now that you have ruined everything, I hope you will have the good manners to shut up and mind your own business.

Then what are you going to do about it? Karen adds, her eyes and words probing Edward even in the darkness of the car. I look at her and my glance pass around her and I watch at the buildings as we drive by. There is an upscale outdoor restaurant with a few brave souls sitting pretending they’re not cold.

I’m pretending too. Pretending that I don’t care.

I see the two individuals holding hands. Must be two lovers who can’t feel the chill of the air, but I feel it and my mind comes to an abrupt halt when Edward says to Karen, I don’t think this is any of your business, Karen. His voice is strong and commanding.

That’s not what I wanted him to say. I wanted him to tell her what it is he’s going to do about my being pregnant. Couldn’t he just tell her and shut her up once and for all.

It’s my business because this young girl is heartbroken, I wasn’t that much younger than Karen. She’s all of twenty three. And you should have known better than to fool her and then fool around with her when you knew you would be marrying a slut, and that slut is carrying your baby. That is damn right cruel if ever I heard of anything, Karen says staring at Edward after raising her voice to him.

Edward is fuming. His hands grasp mine but he has too much respect for women to say what he really wants to say to her, and that is, fuck off, and get the fuck out of my car with your smart mouth. Yet Edward remains calm and quiet and listens attentively.

I glance at Karen and she never knows when to shut up. She doesn’t know when she has won this fight. Her head is moving and she’s getting ready for another round with Edward. Oh no, Karen, I want to say, you have crossed the line stand down. I’ve seen her many times argue with my brother until she got her point across. She’s relentless when she gets started and no one can stop her.
