I graduated high school with a scholarship to the University of California Berkeley and that’s where I met my best friend, Susan Belgrave. She’s a pretty blond about five feet two and a size zero, with a great sense of humor, and she recognized how unprepared I was my first year on campus.

In jeopardy of losing my scholarship, I turned to her for help and she did the best she could to tutor me. I had no ear for foreign languages and in a few days I had to pass a test that I knew would signal the end of my scholarship, and the end of my time at this university.

Susan spoke fluent Spanish and I couldn’t speak it to save my life. I did manage a few phrases, but not enough to stand before a class with a professor who thought Spanish should be the state language. I was hopeless and if I didn’t pass my finals, I would have to get a job just to get my passage back to Texas. Whoever heard of a Texan not speaking Spanish? Professor Hernandez said in Spanish to me as I pleaded with him to give me more time.

Walking out of the lab, I see Susan chatting with her boyfriend Carlos who happens to be from Mexico. How did you do? She asked after taking a breather from kissing Carlos. He pulled her close to him as if a bed was near and they could fall into it.

I flunked the course. But I wasn’t sure she heard me with Carlos almost swallowing her tongue. Susan pushed him away from her, and he stomped off, not before slapping her on the butt
