    ONE TO LOVE

"The first time I had him, I knew he was something special. I would never be satisfied to be only a job to him. She knew that." —Spencyr Ramynad, former First Aide to Rycka Marckale and author of Politics in the Time of Stantyn Panyl’s Presidentship, 8644–

Tomas jogged beside Tyran on the packed soil that wound across the grounds of Sa’Marckale’s private residence, tall trees shading their path from the glare of sunlight. He and Tyran had been sharing afterhours recently, mostly because Tomas enjoyed running the trails that stretched from deep within the harem gardens to the very outskirts of Sa’Marckale’s property and so did Tyran.

Tomas hadn’t told anyone his story before, mainly because no one had ever asked, but also because he had taken a while to come to terms with his agreement to join when he’d never actually intended to do any such thing.

My cousins, Jyncka and Hraben, they made sure I didn’t have any real choice, he told Tyran.

And that was true. He hadn’t approached the employment agency of his own free will, and he hadn’t signed his first contract without second, or even third, thoughts. He had never wanted to work in a harem. His mother and father had taught him that giving in to the pleasures of flesh weakened one’s character and they had used the stories of the bureaucrats’ and officers’ excesses as their proof.

Before their deaths, they had belonged to one of the primary
