    NEVER ENOUGH

"We should start as we mean to go on, he said in the gravest of tones. He trailed his fingers across Galar’s cheek. Only you can satisfy my most wicked desires …" —The Haunting of Two Houses (Illustrated, 8692) by Yestrille Trynt

    CHAPTER 1

Kalar of Lourda had learned one lesson early and well. Trust no one without cause. That lesson had guided him all the days of his life as the son of the man everyone knew as Ta’Lourda, ruthless master of the Great Isle of the Great Ani.

Ta’Lourda held the island in the palm of his hand, his to rule until the return of the Loryn heir. There were rumors that the Loryn heir had died in some far-off land and rumors that he had never left the isle at all. Ta’Lourda denied all such rumors—his hold on the isle depended on the belief that the Loryn heir would return. Kalar had known since his fifteenth year that Ta’Lourda expected him to fight to keep the isle under Lourda rule if that didn’t happen.

But Kalar had not had any intention of ever submitting to the chains of familial duty. He did exactly as much as he had to do to keep his father from tightening his fist around him in the same way his father had tightened his fist around the Great Isle, and never more.

    And yet …

The wavering voice of Kalar’s new husband carried from the farthest corner of the dimly lit room to Kalar’s location behind his sturdy, age-worn desk. "I thought my stomach would hold up better than—Ugggh …"

Yestrille’s words ended on a low groan and a sound Kalar had heard many times since he’d escaped the islands the only way he knew how—by taking direct control of the ships that ran supplies between Ani’Hain, R’H’ani, and the Great Isle.

He was not the captain of the ship they were sailing through the choppy waves tonight. But everyone knew he was the ultimate authority, and he spent most of his time aboard one ship or another, in cabins that were much like this one.

He had his desk and a sofa, chairs, a table, and a bed. They were all he needed.

His father had decided Kalar also needed a husband, and he had notified Kalar of that fact yesterday.

Kalar had intended to decline. Falling under the tow of his father’s demands went against everything Kalar had learned over the years about how to deal with his father. Anything his father wanted from him so desperately had to be in his father’s best interests and not Kalar’s.

Kalar would not be his mother, marrying foolishly and having to live with the regret that followed.

He’d agreed to the meeting. Nothing more.

He was now a married man.

Pale moonlight spilled through the squared portlights, and warm light glowed dimly from fixtures attached high on the bulkhead at Kalar’s back. Neither was bright enough to cut through the deep shadows of the alcove where Yestrille stooped over the sink, his back heaving.

Kalar still didn’t understand his own actions. He didn’t know why he’d gone from cold certainty that he would send Yestrille away moments after meeting him to watching Yestrille with impatient anticipation for a consummation that would happen immediately after the signing of the marriage contract.

That was, um … Yestrille’s hand went to his stomach and his voice wavered and died. He moved away from the narrow alcove that held a sink and mirror and staggered halfway across the room, wobbling on legs that had never been to sea.

He dragged his arm across his mouth, the fine blue fabric of his shirt clinging tightly to his chest and shimmering in the moonlight as he crossed the rest of the distance, weaving around the dark
