HIS TO TAKE
"Your employer is buying your loyalty. Give it, but only within the bounds of your contract. Giving more than you have to is a sure way to end up with less than you’re worth. Firamyn Traverstyne, employment agent, Low U’rgee Harem Employees United, L.U.H.E.U., 8645–
Not every day was the same inside Sa’Marckale’s harem, but rarely were any different enough to cause Meryl to worry his life was about to take a turn he wouldn’t like. But that day—during that show, with that man—had given him a taste of worry for the first time in the three years he’d been a worker inside Sa’Marckale’s exclusive harem.
The man’s whispered words wouldn’t leave Meryl’s thoughts as he walked from the kitchens to the residence building where he lived. He had a hunk of savory bread and sliced meat in one hand and a cloth-wrapped assortment of spice cakes in the other. The spice cakes had made his mouth water on sight and he’d taken one of each flavor.
He had enough spice cake to feed four of his neighbors. He usually shared when he brought food from the kitchens. Today, maybe not. He had things to worry about and he always found it easier to worry on a full stomach.
He enjoyed his work, as a rule. He had enjoyed it a bit more when Stenyl was around, but the fact was that Stenyl was gone, and Meryl had no choice but to move on from the feelings Stenyl had caused him to feel.
Sometimes he’d enjoyed the antagonistic relationship they’d shared; most times he’d just wished Stenyl wasn’t such an ass.
