    HIS TO KEEP

"The division between the great R’H’ani Empire and its colonies started with a broken contract between my father and the faithless minister of Ani’Hain who refused to honor his signature." —Stephen Kardale, great grandson of the eighteenth R’H’anian Emperor Stephen Petyr Kardale, from the speech he gave before the announcement of the winners of the first New United R’H’ani election, 8018–8067

His generous harem contract had been a trap. He’d been sold to an Ani’Hain smuggler by his employer.

Brylan swallowed hard and tried not to stare out at the crowd gathered at the foot of the wide steps.

A fresh batch! a man even taller than the tall man yelled out to the crowd. He had dark hair and a short beard and his voice carried with a certain twang that emphasized the differences between Hainian and R’H’ani pronunciations. Brylan had to listen closely to make sure he didn’t miss anything.

    Once Brylan had reached the
