This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons, living or dead, is a coincidence.

    For The Halibut

Hal had always been a bit odd, even for a race of shape-shifting halibut. His parents had long ago written him off as an unproductive member of their species and their assumptions were proven when he decided to follow his best friend home for mating season. They tried to explain to him what happened when salmon went home but he simply told them he was happy to be with the fish he loved to the very end. His whole school turned out to see them off and Hal was glad they had finally accepted him.

The journey was long and Hal had a hard time keeping up with his friend. When they reached the river, he lost sight of him completely. Struggling against the current in the harsh, fresh water was too much and Hal found himself gasping for breath in his rarely used human form on the banks of the river.

Defeated and weary, Hal curled up on his side and let the water leak from his eyes. It was the pain in his stomach that forced him to get up and look for something to eat. There had been little time to rest and nothing to eat as he'd traveled with his beloved to the hatching pools. Looking around, he realized he had no idea what he could eat on land this far away from home. If he changed back into a fish, he'd never make it up the river.

Determined to finish the trek and meet his friend at the pools, even if he had to make the last part of the journey on foot, Hal began to look for something to eat. Following the river as much as he could, he eventually had to go further into the forest that surrounded it to get better footing. His school had teased him for not spending as much time in human form
