    Chapter One

    a new life

It was 1940, in the little town of Aynor South Carolina. The town is located off the northeast coast of South Carolina. Pre –WWII this town boasted only a population of just under 200 people. Currently, the population is not much greater, topping off at around 650. Most of the people knew each other. It was an ideal and peaceful setting which was the home of Bethany Luis age 23 and her husband Harold Luis age 24. Both children of farmers, they were married just over a year when President Roosevelt had the first draft numbers drawn for WWII. Harold was one of average age for a draftee at the time. He was responsible and pretty mature for his age though. He had been working with his dad since he could walk and the same for his new bride Bethany. He knew she was a capable women but another circumstance occurred just before Harold was notified of his draft that he was deeply concerned about.

Harold’s uncle died this past winter and left a far larger ranch to Harold and his wife. It was located in Gilbert South Carolina. He left them with plenty of money and everything they needed to run the place, including the move south. But, he and his wife had no children and no family nearby to lend Bethany a hand on the ranch. Albeit there was no real farming to be done, but there was livestock and plenty of it. A woman could never run this thing alone.

Well my little darling Bethany, we have ourselves a real dilemma here don’t we?

He sat at the rustic wooden table in the kitchen, looking out on to the small farm they had together.

Yes I should say we do dear, I should say we do.

Bethany was not referring to the new ranch as much as she was sick to her stomach at the thought of her husband going to war soon. She mentioned nothing of it so as not to ass stress on Harold. She knew men well enough not to make matters worse with her own issues.

What do you propose we do Harry?

She sat down in front of him and reached across the table to hold his hands. He smiled warmly and appreciated his bride’s strong confident attitude toward him.

I know you are a strong capable women Bethany, you have more than enough experience for a farm, but for a ranch; in a place you have never lived without help concerns me.

I have to admit it crossed my mind several times, but I know you will figure it all out.

She gave her husband the vote of confidence he needed and still never mentioned the draft and let Harold bring it up.

You know, I have to go and there is not much I can do about it, my country needs me.

    I know Harry, I know.

She got up and crossed her arms. She turned her back towards him with her head hung.

All Harry could see was her long wavy red hair around her shoulders. Se fought back tears.

I didn’t mean it like that, I love you Beth but it is my duty as an American to serve and protect you and our future family.

I know my love, I know and I don’t mean to be selfish She said with tears in her eyes.

He got up and turned her around to face him. He took her face in his hands.

Beth, I don’t want you to think of the worst when I’m gone.

I want you to think of what our children will look like or what their names will be

I will take care of things while you are gone and make sure it’s all beautiful and comfortable for you when you come home to me.

Harry embraced his wife hard and let her cry on his shoulder until she had no strength left to cry anymore. He was good like that; he was good with her emotions because she was a balanced woman that never gave him any trouble. He knew that for a woman her age that was rare.

When she stopped crying he said Well, we will have no shortage of water if you keep that up. She laughed, then he laughed and for a moment the tension was broken. Harry took advantage of that immediately.

What do you say we mosey on over to the bedroom and relate in the married way my dear Bethany?

    She giggled, slapping him in
