This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to persons, living or dead, is a coincidence.

Everybody in Furblast, Washington knew about the bear in the woods outside of town and how sometimes he wasn't always a bear. Stories had been circulating for decades about the man with the huge beard, long hair and penchant for plaid that would walk through the quiet streets at night.

When Deputy Fitzpatrick first heard the stories, he was certain they were talking about a slightly eccentric homeless man who was making his home in the woods. After the first snows, he asked if anybody had seen or heard from the man. They told him, in all seriousness, that they never watched for him during the late fall and winter because they assumed he hibernated like all of the natural bears.

The police chief denied his request to go looking for the homeless man, telling him that the man chose to live out of their jurisdiction so they weren't responsible for his well-being when he was outside of the town. Nobody was surprised when the deputy took a vacation and chose to go camping. He was a smart young man who knew the woods around town as well as anybody, he was armed and had a radio to call for help. The werebear wasn't known for hurting people so most of them expected him to come back with a beard and a lot of pictures of a forest in Washington during the winter.

The first day he was supposed to report back from vacation, he didn't show up at the police station. The chief was concerned but Deputy Fitzpatrick was young and single so the initial speculation was that he'd come back early and spent the rest of his vacation with a woman and lost track of time. Just to be safe, though, a couple of the other police officers went out to check his campsite.
