Archive station SETI Alpha 9 spun silently in space. It shared its orbit with planet AP-9, known among xenoarcheologists as the Treasure Planet. Planet AP-9 had a slightly irregular orbit around its sun that created living conditions perfect to supportive thriving civilizations, only to shift, destroying all life on the planet. Or so it would seem. Now, there were signs that the plants would be returning and it was the perfect time to comb through the upper crust for signs of the last civilization that had lived there. The shells of great buildings dotted the landscape around dried seas and the latest team of xenoarchealogists had just left the space station for the planet.
Until the next supply ship arrived, probably carrying more archaeologists along with seeds and computers, Corinne was alone in the archives. She was grateful for the solitude, actually. Not that she disliked working with people but each team of archaeologists that came to the planet stopped at the archives first, to see what had been collected by previous explorations. While many of the findings were digitized, there were often problems with certain technologies on the surface, leading to researchers resorting to pen and paper to record what they found.
It was the work of several lifetimes to record, store and cross-reference those findings. There were ten decks devoted to storing the written records, which had at least been cataloged by her predecessors with the help of the original archaeologists and their assistants. They'd found, in the course of creating the catalog, that the atmosphere had weathered the papers faster than they should have. This meant the oldest had to be handled carefully and checked by human eyes when they were put away.
She was pushing a cart of the special manuscripts down a deserted corridor when something caught her eye. Down one of the many aisles of shelves, stood a man. At least, from where she was standing, he looked like a man. As she got closer, she realized what he was and why he was there.
He was a cyborg. One that had fallen into the uncanny valley that was known to plague those humans who chose to replace the parts of their body that wore out as they
