Beginners’ Guide to Paleo Diet - Eva Hugh

Chapter 1: What is the Paleo Diet?

Frequently referred to as the Caveman’s Diet, the Paleo Diet is based on the types of foods that our ancestors ate and their lifestyle. They consumed unprocessed, natural and whole foods. They lived long and healthy lives even though their basic routine was simply eat-hunt-sleep. They were free from obesity, anorexia, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other diet-related diseases.

Supporters of the Paleo Diet believe that our bodies are not yet ready to digest and utilize ‘modern’ foods, leading to heath-related issues, such as acidity, acne and other digestive and dermatological problems. They also believe that the ancestral eating habits can help us to lose weight and avoid the modern malaise.

This notion does hold some weight, especially if you compare the average Homo Sapien of the past with the modern man. The average Homo Sapien was tall, agile, muscular and versatile. His body had adapted to a lifestyle that involved hunting and gathering foods. In contrast, the modern man is overweight. He loads up on synthetic products, supplements and grains, like bread, rice, corn and pasta. In addition, desk jobs and a lack of activity mean that he is consuming less energy. This, combined with stress, causes the modern man to become obese.

Modern human beings consume foods that consist of preservatives and other products such as lactic acid, propionic acid, sorbic acid and nitrites. These can have been shown to cause inflammation, skin problems and cancer in the long run.

The Paleo Diet focuses on food groups and foods that your body is capable of utilizing, consuming and digesting. It eliminates all foods, food groups and synthetic products that harm our bodies and lead to a plethora of diseases. At the same time, it allows you to eat tasty and nutritious foods. Besides weight loss, many Paleo dieters report that they sleep better and feel more energised.

Chapter 2: The building blocks of Paleo Diet

The two core tenets of the Paleo Diet are:

    1)  Eat whole, unprocessed and organic foods, like:

    -  Beef, chicken, lamb, shrimp, pork chops (choose meat derived from grass-fed animals)

    -  Fish – Wild fish, red snapper, bass, sardines, tuna,
