    A OFFICER AND HIS SHIFTER

I’ve been in firefights in Iraq, had my convoy hit by explosives, and crawled my way through landmines in the desert. Despite that, my heart never beat as fast as it did now. In less than ten minutes, I’d see him again. No photos or grainy video chat, but the real deal.

My eyes went up to a photo of us together just before I shipped out. Skinny, short blond Justin on the left and me next to him. Even then I kept my brown hair cut military style. I had a similar camo tank top like the one I’m wearing now.

Maybe I should have dressed up.

    It’s not a date.

    Isn’t it?

I was muscular back then but extra calories and a workout bench to relieve the boredom packed on the muscles. I wondered what he would think when he saw me for real.

My fingers went up to touch his side of the photo.

You could even touch him again. I let out a long breath. Even night patrol didn’t scare me this much. Keep it together, Mark.

The dusty country roads to our hometown looked the same. I expected little change in four years. It was both comforting and sad. You could go home again, but home never improved.

Guess we all have our path in life.

For me that meant a four-year stint in the military until my CO encouraged me to leave. They repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Officially, they couldn’t dismiss me for homosexuality. All it took was one old homophobic guard to ruin my career. I didn’t need a bullet accidentally finding its way in my back or miss out on further promotions.

So I got out with enough money and bonuses to make life comfortable. Now the question was what to do? Military life is very structured. You do this, that, and whatever your commanding officer tells you to do. Now I was a civilian. Paradoxically, the freedom to do anything kept me from going out and seeing the world. Like a bird returning to his nest, I came back to my hometown.

    I let out a
