FATHER LEONARD

I waited in my car as I watched the last woman leave. This church is open for confession every week day from 3:00 to 5:30. It took an hour to drive over to this part of town, but I had to make absolutely sure that the priest I confess to won’t know who I am. I can’t confess to Father Darren at my own church for that reason.

Gathering up the courage, I flicked my cigarette butt into the street and rolled up my window. Thinking again for a few seconds, I decided that I had to share the burden of guilt that I’m carrying and offer it to God to show me a path to redemption. A path away from temptation.

The heavy door creaked as I pulled it open and stepped inside the vestibule. I’ve always marveled at the architecture of really old churches likes this, and this one was built back in the early 1800’s. I think old churches like this are the reason I’m studying to become and architect. Walking silently through the narthex, I glance down the north aisle side of the main sanctuary confirming no one is inside praying. Walking to the other side of the narthex I do the same with the east side of the nave.

A small red light is on over the curtained entrance to the confessional. Fuck! That means someone is in there right now. Looking behind me for an alcove to duck into, I hear a faint click sound and look again. The red light has been turned off. A deep sigh of relief escapes me as I make my way to the confessional.
