Chapter One
The sounds outside the door forced Nick Sparrow to burrow his head deeper into the pillow as he pulled the ratty bedclothes up around his shoulders. It was futile to try and block them out, but still he made an effort to do exactly that. They were out there waiting for him. At some point he’d have to face them again. They moaned and clawed at the motel room door, knocking against it. Hopefully the barricaded door and fortified windows would hold them off until he was ready to make a move again. For now he was safe, but that wouldn’t last forever. Nothing did.
Sweet Jesus,
he muttered, jumping out of bed. Were they ever going to quit? He walked to the door and looked through the peephole. He ran both hands over the double lock. He reinforced it with a chest of drawers too. It was a false sense of security, but security all the same. He had to lean in over the chest of drawers to effectively see outside. Nick learned early on that barricades were needed no matter where he took up residence during his travels. There was no debating that. It was a matter of survival.
Two of them stood on the other side of the door. The rancid smell of their rotting flesh no longer bothered him, and at times when he did wince a little, it no longer sickened him like it had in the beginning when the plague started to spread, subsequently bringing back the dead.
