Introduction
Let’s be honest, no one likes stress. It plays havoc with our minds, rips apart our stomachs, and ultimately it destroys our health. Really, it’s totally an unpleasant situation all around to be in.
We all know what stress is because there isn’t one person alive who has never gone through some sort of stress over their course of their lives. That being said, can we define stress?
Right now, if you are sitting and reading this, right where you are this moment -- and you had to define stress, what would you say it was? Would you say that it is a condition that does not feel good? Would you say it is a condition that takes away your appetite or makes you eat more? While those are not exact definitions of stress, they are good descriptions of symptoms that stress can cause, and they simply are not pleasant for anyone. But, that’s just the beginning. So, to truly understand stress and its effect on us, we need to take a deeper look at what it is.
Preface
If you are reading this book you are probably suffering from some sort of stress disorder, or you know someone who is. You’re reading because you want some answers as to how you can help yourself or others to get better. You want to know why you feel the way that you do. You want to know why it makes you feel like you do? What are your symptoms? How do you describe what you are going through to your doctor?
Everyone reacts differently to stress, how does stress make you feel? How is it affecting your life? Have you put on weight or started drinking too much?
The reason I wrote this book is because, years ago, I went through a painful experience which led to a stress condition. That was 5 years ago, I am older, wiser, and I have a few more gray hairs than I had 5 years ago.
MY STORY:
My story begins when my father remarried and I was 11. My sister and I went to live with them. I left school when I was 16 and started working for my father at his construction company. My father was a master builder with a talent of being able to look at an empty field and see the finished construction. In advance, he could see where the problems were going to be and how to solve them. Me, all I ever saw was an empty field.
I was a self-employed contractor, meaning that I paid my own taxes and national insurance. Furthermore, it signified that if I didn’t work, onsite, for a day, I didn’t get paid for that day. The system had no sick pay if I was ill. I had to take out additional insurances, just in case anything happened and I couldn’t work. I covered my credit cards, my mortgage, I had everything covered and it cost me a small fortune.
GETTING STUCK IN THE MUD:
In 1987, I was working for my father as a section foreman. I supervised about 15 men from different trades. One day, it was raining heavily and my job included assuring that all workers had gone home before I left the site. I finished checking the site, got ready to leave and my car got stuck in the mud and I had to free it, on my own.
To shorten this personal soap opera, I tried to push the car out of a rut when I felt something give in my back. I couldn’t move at all. It took me an hour to get back into my car and drive home. Obviously I herniated discs in my lower back. Since then I have had constant problems with my lower back especially in cold weather.
More recently, in 2003 I was in an automobile accident where we were rear-ended. My back was still fragile and the impact of being rear-ended meant that I was unable to walk 10 steps without severe pain. The driver, of the rear-ending car, was of course uninsured, so I naively believed that my insurance would cover everything. Hahaha! The truth about insurance is they ensure nothing - until their is validated film or digital imaging showing responsibility. If it’s not on film, they call you a fraud. Actually, even if it does appear on film, the first step for pain management, with insurance company involvement, is always a psychiatrist with a specialty in pain management. Who conveniently says that the pain is psychogenic in nature and the patient is over-reacting to the situation. That report is another tactic of denying claims.
As most physicians will tell you, muscle and disc disorders don’t show up on normal x-rays, and MRI and CT scans are so expensive, so I could never prove that I had a problem. By looking at me walking, anyone who wasn’t blind could tell I wasn’t faking.
THE BIG STRESS - FINANCIAL STRESS WHILE YOU’RE IN PAIN:
When I got rear-ended, I had rebuilt my body sufficiently to a point where I was earning £750 - £1000, somewhere around $1500-$2000 per week. I was unable to work for a long time, my income stopped. My sick pay compensation from the insurance company was about £75 / $150 per week sick pay, just 10% of my lowest wages in years.
After 18 months with hardly any income, and falling £40,000/$80,000 in debt, the insurance companies still refused to honor the claims. My back was still not strong enough to return to work in construction, and I was faced with an ultimatum either go bankrupt or find another way of making money without the construction industry.
I couldn’t file bankruptcy because I had so much equity in my home, which I would lose through auction sale, in order to pay my creditors, leaving my family homeless. Something I couldn’t do to them. I also realized, that if I wanted to go back to work, I would need a spinal epidural every 3 months just to ease some of the pain.
I decided to start to look for a job and to work for another person for the first time in my life. It was an eye opening experience for me as I was able to pick and choose when and where I worked. Over those next 5 years I choose sales, the auto industry, in various factories and most recently I’ve worked in retail sales for a major chain.
In 3 years I went from earning £13.00 / $26.00 per hour to earning £5.00 / $10.00 per hour. Creditors don’t really care what problems you are having they want their money. Not one of the credit card companies called and told me that because of all my problems I had, that I didn’t need to pay them this month’s payment. That just doesn’t ever happen.
You start getting threatening phone calls, in the night, telling you that if you don’t make a payment right now they will start taking legal action. For me, instead of getting help with my debt, I just put the letters in a
