    Juggling with Balls

Games with balls have been popular since ancient times. In those days, such sports formed an important part of the exercise of every age group. Greeks and Romans had their own playing courts and fields, and youngsters practised hitting, throwing, and catching much as boys do today. In every age, the round ball has had an irresistible appeal: people toss and catch it, hit it, and push it with their hands, feet, and even with their heads! Children stand in front of house walls and never seem to tire of throwing a ball back and forth. Many of us have perhaps made a ball bounce on a toe. And in playing soccer, as everyone knows, you must be able to control the ball with your head.

The word ball comes from French, and the basic meaning of the French word bal is dance. Looking further back into linguistic history, we find the Latin word ballare meaning to dance.

The goal is literally to teach the balls to dance. With skill, the balls should dance and circle around, up and down, back and forth, defying gravity with their flight. First, get yourself five or six balls of the same size but with as different coloration as possible. Important: these should be no larger than tennis balls. In the beginning, in fact, you should use balls that are even smaller than tennis balls. Give special attention, also, to the surface quality of the balls you use. The character of the surface is very important in juggling. Neither highly polished nor fuzzy tennis balls should be used. Highly polished balls become moist from unavoidable perspiration on your hands and slip too easily when they are grasped. Fuzzy balls absorb moisture and make the palms of your hands too dry for a firm grip. Balls with rough and unvarnished surfaces are your best choice, and in some cases, even solid rubber balls can be used.

When you have acquired balls of the right size, your juggling can begin. Looked at from an artistic standpoint, ball juggling presents an impressive exhibition of tossing and catching. Your skilled hand directs the movement of the balls, as you use your knowledge of gravity. We will often speak of gravity in this book, but fear not, you won’t have to
