Cardigans
CROCHET KNIT
Mini-Cardigan
Materials: 18/19/20 (1 oz.) balls Patons Double Knitting or Patons Totem Double Crepe. Pair each No. 10 and No. 7 Queen Bee
needles. No. 10 crochet hook. 8 buttons.
Measurements: To fit 33–34/35–36/37–38 inch bust; length from top of shoulders, 21 1/2 ins. all sizes; sleeve seam, 16 ins. all sizes.
Tension: Equivalent to a basic tension of 5 1/4 sts. and 7 rows to an inch over stocking-stitch on No. 7 needles.
Abbreviations: Tw.2 L.=knit into back of 2nd st. on left needle, then k. into front of 1st st. and slip both sts. off needle together.
Tw.2 R.=k. into front of 2nd st. on left needle, then k. into front of 1st st. and slip both sts. off needle together.
Tw.2 M.=p. into front of 2nd st. on left needle, then p. into front of 1st st. and slip both sts. off needle together.
sl.=slip; p.s.s.o.=pass slipped stitch over; t.b.l.=through back of loop.
BACK
With No. 10 needles, cast on 109/115/121 sts. and work 1 1/2 ins. k. 1, p. 1 rib, rows on right side having a k. 1 at each end, and ending with wrong side facing.,
Next row: rib 5/10/2, * work twice in next st., rib 7/6/6; rep. from * to end: 122/130/138 sts.
With right side facing, change to No. 7 needles and pattern as follows: 1st row: p. 2, * k. 2, p. 2; rep. from * to end.
2nd row: k. 2, * p. 2, k. 2; rep. from * to end. 3rd row: p. 2, * Tw.2 L., p. 2; rep. from * to end. 4th row: as 2nd.
5th row: p. 1, * k. 2 tog., bring wool forward to front of work, wool round needle, sl.1, k. 1, p.s.s.o.; rep. from * to last st., p. 1.
6th row: k. 1, p. 1, * (k. 1, k. 1 t.b.l.) into the 2 ′made′ loops of previous row, Tw.2 M.; rep. from * to last 4 sts., (k. 1, k. 1 t.b.l.) into the 2 ′made′ loops of previous row, p. 1, k. 1.
7th row: p. 1, * Tw. 2 L., Tw.2 R.; rep. from * to last st., p. 1. 8th row: as 2nd. Rows 3–8 inclusive form patt.
Work straight in pattern until back measures approximately 13 1/2 ins., ending with 6th pattern row.
Shape armholes by casting off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st. at each end of next and every alternate row until 98/106/106 sts. remain.
Work straight until back measures 21 1/2 ins. down centre, ending with right side facing.
Shape shoulders by casting off 9/11/11 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then 10/10/10 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows. Cast off remaining 40/44/44 sts.
FRONTS
Left With No. 10 needles, cast on 51/55/59 sts. and work 1 1/2 ins. k. 1, p. 1 rib as for back, increasing 7 sts. evenly across on last row: 58/62/66 sts.
With right side facing, change to No. 7 needles and pattern as for back, and work straight until front matches back at side edge, ending with 6th pattern row.
Shape armhole by casting off 6 sts. at beg. of next row. Work 1 row, then decrease 1 st. at beg. of next and every alternate row until 46/50/50 sts. remain.
Work straight until front measures 19 1/2 ins. down centre, ending with wrong side facing.
Shape neck by casting off 7/9/9 sts. at beg. of next row, then decrease 1 st. at neck edge on every row until 29/31/31 sts. remain.
Work a few rows straight until front matches back at armhole edge, ending with right side facing.
Shape shoulder by casting off 9/11/11 sts. at beg. of next row, then 10/10/10 sts. at beg. of following 2 alternate rows.
Right Work to correspond with left front reversing shapings.
SLEEVES
With No. 10 needles, cast on 47/51/55 sts. and work 1 1/2 ins. k. 1, p. 1 rib as for back, increasing 7 sts. evenly across on last row: 54/58/62 sts.
With right side facing, change to No. 7 needles and pattern as for back, shaping sides by increasing 1 st. at each end of 3rd and every following 6th row until there are 86/90/94 sts., taking increased sts. into pattern as they are made.
Work a few rows straight until sleeve seam measures 16 ins., ending with 6th pattern row.
Shape top by casting off 6 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st. at each end of next and every alternate row until 62/70/78 sts. remain.
Pattern back, then decrease 1 st. at each end of every row until 18/18/18 sts. remain. Cast off.
TO MAKE UP
Press parts very lightly on wrong side under a damp cloth, avoiding ribbing.
Join shoulder, side and sleeve seams; insert sleeves.
Neck border With right side facing and No. 10 hook, start at top of right front and work 5 rows double crochet all round neck, decreasing 5 sts. evenly on both 2nd and 4th rows. Fasten off.
Left Front Border With right side facing, work 6 rows d.c. down left front from top of neckborder to bottom of welt. Fasten off.
Right Front Border Work to correspond with left border, with the addition of 8 buttonholes in 3rd row. 1st to come 1/2-inch up from lower edge, 8th 1/2-inch down from top and remaining 6 spaced evenly between.
First mark position of buttons on left front with pins to ensure even spacing, then work holes to correspond.
Make a buttonhole over 4 d.c. as follows:—1 d.c. in 1 d.c., 2 chain, miss 2 d.c., 1 d.c. in 1 d.c.
Press all seams and crochet edgings. Sew on buttons.
These directions are for size 12. Changes for sizes 14, 16 and 18 are in parentheses.
MATERIALS
BERNAT Willowspun (2 oz. pull skeins) — 10(11–12–12)
1 pair each straight knitting needles Nos. 3 and 5 OR ANY SIZE NEEDLES WHICH WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW
5 buttons
GAUGE: 13 sts = 2 inches8 rows = 1 inch
PATTERN STITCH: Multiple of 4 sts plus 3.
Row 1: P 3, * skip 1 st, K the next st but do not drop this st off needle, P the skipped st and drop both sts off left-hand needle (a right twist made), P 2, repeat from * across row.
Row 2: K 3, * P 1, K 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 3: P 2, * make a right twist, P 2, repeat from *, ending P 3 instead of P 2.
Row 4: K 4, * P 1, K 3, repeat from *, ending P 1, K 2.
Row 5: P 2, * skip 1 st, P in BACK LOOP of next st but do not drop this st off needle, K the skipped st and sl both sts off left-hand needle (a left twist made), P 2, repeat from *, ending P 3 instead of P 2.
Row 6: Repeat Row 2.
Row 7: P 3, * make a left twist, P 2, repeat from * across row.
Row 8: K 2, * P 1, K 3, repeat from *, ending P 1, K 4. Repeat these 8 rows for pattern stitch.
BACK: Using No. 3 needles, cast on 103(107–115–123) sts. K 8 rows (4 ridges) in garter st. Change to No. 5 needles and work even in pattern st until piece measures 4 inches. On next row inc 1 st each end of needle and repeat this inc every 1 inch 5(6–5–5) times more, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work even in pattern as established on 115(121–127–135) sts until piece measures 12(12–12 1/2–12 1/2) inches, ending with a wrong side row. SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLES: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3(4–5–6) sts. Row 3: K 1, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso (2 sts decreased), being careful to keep pattern, work to last 4 sts, K 3 tog (2 sts decreased), K 1. Row 4 and all even rows: P 2, work in pattern st to last 2 sts, P 2. Repeat last 2 rows 2(3–3–5) times more — 97(97–101–99) sts. On next row K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso (dec), work to last 3 sts, K 2 tog (dec), K 1. Then Repeat Row 4. Repeat the last 2 rows 28(28–29–28) times more. Bind off remaining 39(39–41–41) sts.
POCKET LINING: Make 2. Using No. 3 needles, cast on 31 sts. Work even in stockinette st for 3 1/2 inches, ending with a K row. Break off and sl sts onto a holder.
LEFT FRONT: Using No. 3 needles, cast on 57(61–65–69) sts. K 8 rows (4 ridges) in garter st. Change to No. 5 needles. On next row work Row 1 of pattern st on 47(51–55–59) sts, sl remaining 10 sts onto a holder to be worked later for front band. Continue in pattern st until piece measures 4 inches, ending with a wrong side row. POCKET OPENING: On next row inc 1 st at arm edge, work until there are 40(42–44–46) sts on needle, sl last 31 sts just worked onto a holder, work to end of row. INSERT POCKET: Work to pocket opening; continuing in pattern st, work 31 sts of one pocket lining onto same needle, work to end of row — 48(52–56–60) sts. Continue in pattern as established, inc 1 st at arm edge every 1 inch 6 (6–5–5) times more, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work even on 54(58–61–65) sts until piece measures 11 inches. Put a marker in work to mark start of neck shaping. SHAPE NECK: On next row dec 1 st at neck edge and repeat this dec every 4th row 15(16–17–17) times more, AND AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 12(12–12 1/2–12 1/2) inches, SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN ARMHOLE: At arm edge bind off 3 (4–5–6) sts, work to end of row. Work 1 row even. Row 3: K 1, sl 1, K 2 tog, psso (2 sts decreased), work to end of row. Row 4 and all even rows: Work to last 2 sts, P 2. Repeat last 2 rows 2(3–3–5) times more, ending with Row 4. On next row K 1, sl 1, K 1, psso (dec), work to end of row. Then repeat Row 4. Repeat the last 2 rows 28(28–29–28) times more. Fasten off. FRONT BAND: Sl 10 sts of front band onto No. 3 needle. Join yarn at inner edge and continue in garter st until piece is same length as front to start of neck shaping. SHAPE LAPEL: On next row inc 1 st at inner edge and repeat this inc every 4th row 15(16–17–17) times more. Work even in garter st on 26(27–28–28) sts until piece is same length as front edge to end of armhole shaping. Bind off.
RIGHT FRONT AND RIGHT FRONT BAND: Work to correspond to left front and left front band, reversing all shaping and placing of pocket and forming first buttonhole when front band measures 1 inch. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at outer edge, K 3, bind off the next 4 sts, K 2 sts more. On next row cast on 4 sts over those bound off previous row. Make 4 more buttonholes, evenly spaced — the last one to be made at start of neck shaping. TO DEC AT ARM EDGE: K to last 4 sts, K 3 tog (2 sts decreased), K 1 and repeat this dec every other row 2(3–3–5) times more. Then work to last 3 sts, K 2 tog (dec), K 1 and repeat this dec every other row 28 (28–29–28) times more.
SLEEVES: Using No. 3 needles, cast on 42(44–46–48) sts. K 1, P 1 in ribbing for 2 1/2 inches. P the next row, inc at even intervals to 47(55–55–63) sts. Change to No. 5 needles and work in pattern st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 3/4 inch 17(16–18–18) times, forming new patterns as sts are increased. Work even in pattern as established on 81(87–91–99) sts until piece measures 18(18–18 1/2–18 1/2) inches, ending with a wrong side row. SHAPE FULL-FASHIONED RAGLAN CAP: At the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 3 (4–5–6) sts. Dec in same manner as on back until 5 sts remain. Bind off.
COLLAR: Using No. 3 needles, starting at outer edge, cast on 93(95–99–99) sts. Row 1: K 1, K 2 tog, K to last 3 sts, K 2 tog, K 1. Row 2: Knit. Repeat these 2 rows 19(20–21–21) times more. Bind off remaining 53(53–55–55) sts.
FINISHING: Sew sleeves to front and back armholes. Sew underarm and sleeve seams. Sew front hands and lapels in place. Sew bound off edge of collar to back of neck and top of sleeves. Sew side edges of collar to bound off edges of lapels. POCKET BANDS: Sl 31 sts of pocket opening onto No. 3 needle. K 8 rows (4 ridges) in garter st. Bind off. Sew pocket linings and pocket bands in place. Finish buttonholes. Block. Sew on buttons.
