In questo libro è spiegata l'importanza di una corretta respirazione, di posture e meditazione, per raggiungere i propri obbiettivi. I 40 esercizi illustrati sono divisi in tre sezioni: esercizi per dimagrire e tonificare le varie parti del corpo, esercizi per il colon, per il 1° e 4° chakra.

Premessa
Ma lo yoga fa dimagrire?
. Quante volte ho sentito i miei allievi rivolgermi questa domanda al nostro primo incontro.
In riferimento al Kundalini Yoga la domanda trova subito una risposta nei tanti kriya proposti dal maestro di kundalini yoga Yogi Bhajan, come ad esempio quelli contenuti nel manuale Kundalini: Slim & Trim Yoga Exercises For Women And Meditations, che vennero da lui insegnati ai partecipanti del corso Women's Training Course nell'estate del 1977.
Se leggerete questo testo rimarrete affascinati dalla profondità con cui Yogi Bhajan tratta 'l'overweight' o il sovrappeso.
In altre parole, come spiega Yogi Bhajan, la fame nervosa o il mangiare compulsivo o irrazionale hanno a che fare con dei fattori psicologici, come ad esempio lo stress, lo sconforto, la preoccupazione, un basso livello di energia e una mancanza di equilibrio fisico ed emozionale.
I vari kriya proposti da Yogi Bhajan in questo senso risultano utili per stimolare il sistema nervoso, ghiandolare, digestivo, circolatorio e ridonare equilibrio al nostro organismo. Questo equilibrio ci darà una calma e consapevolezza profonda e cambierà anche il nostro rapporto con il cibo, perché ci porterà a capire veramente e in maniera naturale di cosa ha bisogno il nostro corpo. Di conseguenza ci aiuterà a seguire uno stile di vita più sano ed equilibrato.
Se poi parliamo dello yoga in senso lato, sono numerose le ricerche che sono state fatte fino ad oggi e che confermano che praticare yoga aiuta a perdere peso e può prevenire la crescita di peso tipica della mezza età.
Qui voglio fare riferimento ad una interessante ricerca, risalente al 2005 e pubblicata sulla rivista Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, a cui fa riferimento il sito http://www.fhcrc.org.
I ricercatori del Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center con la collaborazione del National Cancer Institute statunitense, hanno analizzato 15.500 uomini e donne sani di mezza età.
A questi uomini e donne è stato chiesto di rispondere ad un questionario riguardante la loro attività fisica tra i 45 e i 55 anni.
Lo scopo era quello di misurare l’impatto della pratica dello yoga (con un impegno di minimo 30 minuti una volta a settimana) sul cambiamento di peso, dissociandolo da altri fattori come la dieta ad esempio e altre attività fisiche.
È emerso che tra i 45 e i 55 anni la maggior parte delle persone ingrassa in media di 500 grammi all’anno. Ciò è dovuto al mancato adeguamento delle abitudini alimentari all’età: alla naturale diminuzione delle necessità energetiche
