About this ebook

The Realms is a parallel dimension hidden between Minneapolis and St. Paul where creatures, humans think of as only mythical, roam free.

Cody’s a shape shifter who has lost his job, but that isn’t anything compared to the fact that Simone, the love of his life, is lusting after another guy.

On top of that, Cody’s best friend, Pete, thinks he’s being lazy. If Cody could only tell him the reason why he knows Pete would understand, but there are always secrets in The Realms.

And Azur, Simone’s mom, has caught Cody in a compromising position with her daughter, which is pretty scary considering what Azur really is in her free time.

Life is tough in The Realms for a shape shifting wolf, and it just keeps getting tougher.

    Chapter 1

Here boy...come on...that's my good boy, Simone said as I dropped the ball at her feet.

I don't want you to get the wrong impression. This is not normal wolf behavior, but I am not like any other wolf you have ever seen. The name's Cody and I am a shape shifter living in The Realms.

And where are The Realms you might ask? Well, maybe that wouldn't be your first question upon hearing the above statement, but hey, it's my story so I get to tell it in the order I want to.

The Realms is a parallel dimension hidden between Minneapolis and St. Paul where creatures humans think of as mythical, paranormal or superstition-based roam free. I was born in the regular world with a human mother and shape shifter father. I was doing okay there until my pop disappeared, my mom died of the big 'C' and my sister was raped. I took it upon myself to seek revenge for the last deed done to my sister. Not the best choice I ever made. I was killed in the process. While waiting in the Midlands for judgment to come down on whether I went to heaven or hell, with no doubt what that was going to be, I escaped and came here.

So I am a dead, sixteen year old, shape shifter that somehow manages to live a somewhat normal life in The Realms.

    Go get it! Fetch!

Wait a sec... Let me get the ball...

That's a good boy, Simone says as she runs her fingers through my thick fur. I would fetch that stupid red ball until The Realms froze over if she would just keep doing that.

Did I tell you Simone's my girlfriend? Well, not really. I mean, I consider her mine, and I know she considers me hers, but she doesn't know I'm a shape shifter. She thinks I'm just one huge, very damn friendly wolf.

That's my Scar. Such a good boy, she's rubbing my belly now. That's where I got my name. She was petting me the first time we were together and I flipped over for the traditional belly rub all us canines love. She noticed my scar. The one that runs almost the full length of my abdomen where the rapist got me with his knife. It's okay, remember, I got him back.

Hey, Simone! Pete called from above.

The hippogriff he was mounted on glided down and landed in the meadow outside Simone and her mom's place. The hippogriff tucked its wings and Pete slid off its back. The beasts make for quick transport in The Realms and the Raven, he's the vampire dude who currently rules The Realms, keeps a herd of them at his estate. Pete works at the estate as part of the grounds crew. The hippogriff immediately started to preen itself. They are funny looking creatures to my way of thinking, winged horse with an eagle's head. But then again, humans have giraffes and moose.

Pete came sidling over to Simone. He put a hand out to me and I rubbed my head under it. He's getting really big, Pete commented. What have you been feeding him?

I glanced down at myself. I have put on a few pounds. Who am I kidding. I have put on a lot of weight. Last time I stepped on the scales as a human I was two hundred and seventy-five pounds. That doesn't translate as very big for a six and a half foot human, but it makes my wolfish self really intimidating.

I don't know, Simone said and knelt down beside me. She's petite, only about five feet tall. She scratched under my chin and I leaned into her hand. He doesn't look fat, does he? She looked concerned. I licked her face. I am Not fat! I was just up to my fighting weight after being on the run for so long. Her mom's cooking is the best and the scraps Simone slips me under the table are a little bit of love from my sweetie.
