Musings of a shrink - Dr. Kinjal Goyal

Unleash the Power of Your Mind!

    Live, Don’t Re Live!

Someone once told me , Don’t ever respect someone professionally simply because he is older than you. He may be 55, but he may have lived the same year 55 times! Wow... I still remember the way I felt when I realised this was true for most people! They live and re live and re re live their years in perfect harmony and with a flawless sync. Only thing is, at the end of some 20 odd years, they are simply older, not wiser.

That took me to another vision. That of a treadmill. In an enclosed room. Maybe with a few mirrors. And a speedometer. So all your life you run... at a fixed speed...may be faster sometimes... but all that changes is your reflection in the mirror. When you surrender the run and step down, you find yourself in the same place where you had begun.

Scary. And hopeless. So what do you do to avoid this? Simple. Step down from the treadmill. Run if you must, but choose a beautiful terrain. Something that inspires you. Which means work as much as you must, but work in a field which invigorates you. Spend years running in the open country side and you will realise that you have come a long way from where you started. We celebrate the addition of a year to our lives every time a birthday pops up. But do we reflect on what made this year any different from the last? If the answer is no, then make a promise to yourself today. Before you add another candle to your cake, make sure you earn it. Do something different...experience something new...anything at all to make it different from the last year that you walked the planet. Once you do that every year, by the time you grow old, you would have earned the respect you see in people’s eyes. You won’t feel like an imposter hiding behind a veil of age inspired respect!

    Emergency Kits for the Mind

We’ve all seen and heard enough about emergency situations and know the importance of having a survival kit ready and within reach. How about those times when our minds need an emergency rescue? When we feel so low, we can touch the feeling. When the tension is so sha rp, it can be cut with a knife? Simple... We need an emergency kit for the mind too. Take some time today to think about what lifts your spirits... what makes you happy no matter how low you’re feeling. It could be a favourite book, a favourite quote, a bar of chocolate, coffee, a chat with a friend or a TV show...could be anything at all.

Now that you have that figured, take a box and fill it with the supplies you need. If it’s a phone chat you crave, write your friend’s name and number and put it in the box. Burn a CD with your favourite TV show or buy the DVD for your favourite movie and put it in too. Likewise add all the feel good stuff. Lastly, seal it with a smiley and keep it within reach in your room.

The next time you feel low, anxious or under the weather, take ten minutes out and reach for this kit. You will thank the stars that you have one! The healing power of a kit like this is also exemplary. Whether it’s a sudden mood swing or a genuinely bad day, you won’t need to worry about being depressed for too long. And yes, while you’re at it, write a letter or a note to all those you care about. Write what it is about them that makes them special to you. Then put it in an envelope and seal it with a smiley and ask them to add it to their emergency box. Watch the sadness evaporate around you.

All of us deserve a happy place... and we might as well make one while we are happy...It makes a lovely spot when the clouds arrive!

    Feeling for Fiction

Have you ever sat through a movie in a theatre listening to faint muffled sobs from the seats around you? And have you ever wondered how can people actually cry for a movie
