    Damn! Rachel looked around, realizing that things had gone very wrong. Instead of arriving before the pandemic, when she would have been able to help, she’d arrived right in the middle. She wasn’t even in the right place. How had they got it so wrong? They had warned her that it was possible something might go wrong, because they hadn’t sent someone through time before, but she didn’t believe even they thought it could have gone as badly as it had, and, as she wouldn’t be able to go home for a couple of weeks, she was going to be trapped living through a crisis that she’d been planning on stopping. Breathing deeply, she did her best to calm herself.

    With all the panic that was going on around her, that wasn’t the easiest thing for Rachel to do. All she could do was hope that meant her appearance hadn’t been noticed. Two weeks wasn’t that long. She could cope with being there for two weeks. Blinking away tears that weren’t going to help, she started walking, because she always thought best when she was doing something. In the lab they’d always joked about her wearing a hole in the floor when she was pacing. Eventually she would be back there and when that happened she was going to talk to them about how she’d ended up where she was. Unless it had something to do with the conversation Carrie and Lloyd were having. Rachel was certain she wasn’t meant to overhear it, and she knew she should have walked away, but they’d been talking about what might happen if the technology sent her to where she’d be most needed.

    As though the technology could do that. She’d laughed it off, knowing that the machine they were using didn’t think. It just did as it was told to do. Yet, while she walked through floods of
