Chapter 1
––––––––
Eva Mateo sat up straight in her desk chair. Something's wrong!
She buzzed her secretary. Gina, have you seen my mother?
Not since early this morning. You want me to check?
No, Gina. No I need to take care of this myself. I have to leave.
She grabbed her purse and her cell phone and rushed to the parking lot. Something was horribly wrong.
Five minutes later, her senses on alert, she was inside the family estate. Mama!
she hollered. Mama are you here?!
She raced up the stairs. Mama! Mama, please answer me!
Silence. There's one way to find out. Her car.
Eva ran back downstairs to the garage and opened the door. Diana's car was parked in the garage. Oh my God! Mama, where are you?
Surely there was an explanation. Don’t panic. Look around. And then she saw it. Her mother's cell phone on the floor of the garage. Eva raced through the house then back up the stairs. Perhaps her mother was in the shower. At 3 in the afternoon?
Mama! Mama, are you here?!
She searched the room and the adjoining bath. Nothing.
Frantic, Eva ran back down the stairs. Perhaps the maid was still here. Or the gardener. Maybe in the servant's quarters. Maritza?! Jesus?!
There was nothing but silence.
Mama, what have you done?
Eva slid down the wall, landing on the floor. She had to clear her mind. She had to think clearly. All this talk of secret compartments and mysterious trips had made her overanxious. There had to be a logical explanation for all of this.
Then why the vision, Eva?
she challenged herself. What was it? How do you know Mama is in danger?
The house was quiet. She could think here. Had her mother said something about this afternoon? Yes, that had to be it. Eva had been preoccupied. Between her mother's mysterious behavior and Carlos, was there any wonder why?
Eva slowly rose to her feet. You’re overreacting,
she said attempting to reassure herself. She thought of going home, but she couldn’t handle Carlos right now. He'd been seriously upset with her this morning. He'd wanted his daily dose of hot sex at daybreak. She'd tried again to explain her feelings. To no avail. Instead of talking, he'd stormed into the shower by himself.
Oh, Carlos. Can’t you see?
Eva sighed. There was no sense in dwelling on her problems with Carlos. Right now her sole focus was on her mother.
She would go back to the office. For now, the office was her best option. She unlocked the door.
Eva.
She turned, startled, and faced the voice. Who are you?
I'm an American.
And you are trespassing on my property!
Eva grabbed her cell phone. I'm calling the police.
Don’t,
he said. I can assure you, the police can do nothing to help.
Help! Help who? Do you know where my mother is?
The man paused and looked directly into her eyes. Not exactly.
Who are you?! How would you have any idea where my mother is, anyway?
I can’t say. You'll just have to trust me.
Trust you? I don't know you. How could I possibly trust you?
Because your mother does. I'm sworn to protect her. And you as well.
Eva stared back at him. Indeed he was an American. She could tell by his accent. If he meant her any harm, surely he would have acted by now. You don’t mean to hurt me, do you?
No,
he said. I'm here to protect you. And I can assure you - we're doing everything we can to find your mother.
Find her?! You mean she really is missing?!
We'll find her. I promise.
He spoke with sincerity. Eva wasn't sure how exactly she knew that other than it seemed, well, obvious.
How? How will you find her?
I can’t tell you, but we will.
And you will protect me how?
We'll stay here on the compound with you. Until your mother is safely home.
Eva wanted to believe everything he said. Problem was, reality was very much in the way. If you're willing to go to all this trouble, then you need to explain to me what my mother is involved in.
Did I say she was involved in anything?
You sound like her!
Eva shouted in frustration. Everything's a secret! What on earth is going on?
Why don't you stay here, Eva. The compound is secure,
he said, ignoring her question. As soon as we hear anything from your mother, I'll let you know. In the meantime, we'll be outside.
She was too weak, too confused to question him. For now she would have to trust him. Eva shut the door and succumbed to her anxiety. She'd been right to fear for her mother. Whatever Diana was involved in, it had just turned deadly.
Chapter 2
––––––––
Diana Mateo shivered. The concrete bench was cold, and the dark room was even colder.
I told you before,
she said. I had nothing to do with the seizure of the ships. Until you told me, I had no idea they'd even been boarded.
Juan Gomez rose from his chair and grabbed her chin. You’re a liar!
Usted es un hombre loco.
I am not a crazy man, you pig!
The second man confronted Gomez. Get out! Did you hear me, get out!
Arder en el infierno!
Diana watched in silence as Gomez turned and left. Surely this other man, the one who called himself El Nivelador was meant to be the good guy. Gain her trust and then she'd talk. Certainly they could do better than that.
You understand you are in serious trouble, Miss Mateo? You know you will be hanged for treason if you refuse to cooperate.
Or hanged for treason if I do,
she smirked.
This is hardly the time for sarcasm, Miss Mateo. When you are days from death.
Nothing like a fair trial. I thought better of you.
Diana paused. After all these years of supporting our revolutionary government, now you are going to hang me. For something I didn’t do.
Your support for the revolution.
His face reddened with rage. If you were not a woman, I would spit on you!
Why else would I risk my life, my family, my business if I were not loyal to the cause?
You protest too much, Miss Mateo. I can only take your word. You have done nothing to prove your loyalty to the revolution. To the contrary,
he snarled, you have destroyed a major project.
I have done no such thing.
She attempted to rise to her feet, but the shackles prevented it.
Prove it.
How can I prove a negative? You believe what you want to believe. Even though you have no evidence.
Tell me who you work for.
El Nivelador rose to his feet. Perhaps then we might spare your life.
What, so I can spend my life in prison? Don’t you see? You’re hell bent on blaming me for something I never did. What you need to do is look for the scoundrel that ruined the transfer.
You are that scoundrel, Miss Mateo. You will die for your treason.
El Nivelador stormed
