Chapter 1
As a child, she had never believed in faeries. The fairytales other children thrived on and dreamed of bored and confused her. That changed suddenly one summer day.
She was working in her garden on the day it happened. Being late summer that was usually where she would be found preparing the garden for the cold weather to come. She loved being outdoors, spending every moment she could there.
Sarah Mitchell?
A man’s voice startled her from her daydreams. She was thinking about a large farm in the middle of nowhere, overflowing with flowers and plants, all grown by her.
As she turned around, she was surprised to see someone she hadn’t spoken to since she was young. Edward, is that really you?
She smiled broadly at the man standing before her. It’s been years. You haven’t changed a bit.
He stood there looking no older than he had the last time she had seen him, nearly fifteen years before. His long blonde hair was tied back in a braid that fell to the center of his back. He was dressed professionally, wearing a grey designer suit. He was her aunt’s dearest friend and her lawyer.
He was pleased she recognized him and held his hand out to help her up from the ground. It has been thirteen years.
She laughed, Tell me, how is Aunt Cat?
His face dropped, sorrow filling his green eyes. I am afraid that is why I am here Sarah. Catherine passed away last week.
She collapsed into a nearby lawn chair, tears flooding her eyes. A sense of disbelief washed over her, but she knew that Edward would never lie about something like this. Realizing that this had to be true brought even more tears.
Aunt Cat had been the only relative on her father’s side whom she had gotten along with. As Sarah’s father had died when she was a child, taken from them in a car accident, the stories her aunt told were the only link she had with him. She had spent many summers with her aunt, exploring the woods around her home town before Sarah’s mother moved them across the country thirteen years ago. She continued to write to Catherine often, calling and talking to her as much as she possibly could. Now she knew why she hadn’t heard from her.
What happened?
Her father’s sister was still fairly young. Sarah had been born while the woman was still in her early teens.
We do not know, it happened very suddenly. I came to see you because she asked in her will that I be the one to give you what she has bequeathed to you. As her friend, it is my honor to do so, and I hope that I can be of service to you as I was to her.
Edward had always spoken so formally and it appeared some things never changed.
What? What could she have given me Edward?
She sat stunned. Her aunt had left her something? She didn’t want the inheritance, she wanted her aunt back.
You were her brother’s only child, and as the two of you were very close, she felt you should inherit. She left you everything Sarah, all her belongings, her money, as well as her home and the property that surrounds it. The only caveat being that you are to read a letter she left for you before you make any sort of decision.
Sarah took the letter that he held out to her, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. Slowly she opened the letter, tearing up at the familiar handwriting.
Dearest Sarah,
If you are reading this, then I have moved on from this world. There is so much I wish I had told you when I was alive. I always believed I would have the time to share it with you. Please know that what I have not told you was done with nothing but love in my heart, and the desire to protect you.
I am a witch.
The world is so much more than you believe, there is such magic out there. Our family has possessed a great power for many generations; passed from father to son, mother to daughter. There have been witches in this family before me and there will be long after I am gone. Your father knew of this, but sadly he was taken from us before he could pass on his own knowledge.
I have left everything to you because I believe that there is great magic within you. I believe you possess the power to become a great witch one day. I have collected many things over the years, and they need a guardian. If these things were to fall into the wrong hands, disastrous events would befall our world and others.
I wish I could be there to help you through the time that is to come, but you will not be alone. Edward will be there to help you, and I am sure there will be other friends along this path.
Remember, you must be strong and do not fear the unknown. I will love and protect you always.
Aunt Cat
She couldn’t help laughing as she reread the letter that she held. "You’re kidding, right? This has to be some sort of joke! Witches? Magic? They’re not real. They’re fairytales told to
