    Chapter One: Introduction

    A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller is a two-act play. It was first staged on 29th of September, 1955, as a one-act verse drama on Broadway.

    The play failed miserably, and consequently Miller revised the play and rewrote in two acts. It was highly successful and became very popular in a short period of time.

    The two-act version of A View from the Bridge first premiered in the New Watergate Theatre Club in London’s West End on 11th of October, 1956. The two-act version was directed by Peter Brook.

    A View from the Bridge is set in America in 1950s. The place is an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.

    The play has a chorus and narrator in the character of Alfieri.

    Eddie is the tragic protagonist of the play. He is obsessed with love of Catherine, though it is improper.

    In his unproduced screenplay titled The Hook Arthur Miller had talked about the corruption on the Brooklyn docks. Eventually, he developed a plot for the present play A View from the Bridge. He disclosed that the plot was related to him as a true story by a lawyer who worked with longshoremen.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    Eddie Carbone is the central character in the play. He happens to be an Italian American longshoreman.
