About this ebook

All believers are carrying out banking. Some bank in earthly banks, others bank in their stomachs, others in clothes, cars, and the like, while some bank in heaven.

The supreme challenge of our time is the effective presentation of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and the building up of the church which is His Bride. This is a difficult and demanding task. If we are to achieve our objectives, then a wholehearted commitment is absolutely necessary.

At conversion, God puts His Holy Spirit within us. This sealing of the believer with the Holy Spirit constitutes a mark of ownership. If our lives are consecrated to the Lord, then our property has to be consecrated as well. We cannot consecrate our lives and leave our property unconsecrated.

If property is to become available for the Lord, it must be delivered from self: from that tyranny that wants to own it, control it and keep it for the use and worship of the self. Therefore, the Holy Spirit must sever our property from the world and from self.

The world was not only judged. It was condemned. It has no future whatsoever. The believer cannot truly invest in this world. We send this book out with prayer that it should stir the hearts of those who belong to the Lord to acquire permanent riches by investing in the Lord and in His gospel here and now.

Read it and let your life be transformed!

The Christian And Money

1. THE CALL TO CONSECRATION

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable, and perfect (Romans 12:1-2).

Ibelieve that this is the best place to begin this message on ‟The Christian and Money" because individual consecration to the Lord Jesus is the very basic requirement for any spiritual service whatsoever. We cannot sacrifice money to the Lord and His work if we ourselves are not sacrificed. If we are holding ourselves back or denying His Lordship in some area of our lives, then what we offer to Him of our material goods will count for nothing. God cannot accept a man’s money when the man himself is not accepted by Him. God is not under obligation to accept any gift. If it comes from an unconverted or a converted but impure heart, He will reject it. It is said of the Macedonians:

... but first they gave themselves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God (2 Corinthians 8:5).

This principle of self being given first is again illustrated in the children of Israel as they left Egypt. They brought out with them their property: gold, silver, cattle, and all. They could do this because they themselves came out of Egypt. It would have been unacceptable to the Lord if they had stayed in Egypt and yet deceived themselves by thinking that their property could go ahead and serve the Lord.

The supreme challenge of our time is the effective presentation of Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and the building up of the church which is His Bride. This is a difficult and demanding task. If we are to achieve our objectives, then a wholehearted commitment is absolutely necessary. A young West African decided to become the Prime Minister of his country. This is how he thought about what it would cost him and how he must meet the cost. It will be understood that what I was doing was complete volte-face in my personal habits. In my code of behaviour, even in my ethical and cultural standards, I could no longer be content with doing much of what gave me pleasure as I could and as little of what caused me discomfort or boredom. The life before me was one of self-sacrifice and self-negation. I would have to give up many things which, though innocent in themselves, might yet hinder the cause which was to become the purpose of living for me. I would have deliberately to judge my every action and decision by an invariable standard: Will it bring me any nearer my goal? In my dress, speech, and habits, I would have to proclaim my gospel, even though this might mean doing things in a way I might find inconvenient, and even distasteful. If a non-Christian said and did that to achieve his goal, ought not the children of the Kingdom do at least the same or more? Can a lesser standard of sacrifice be demanded of us?
