The Black Wolf's Mark IV - Pet TorreS

    Prologue

    MURAD

    1

Zidane, I am an old man with much knowledge about life, I say gazing into the young man’s face. Zidane gazes in my direction. I can see he looks quite apprehensive at my words. I have existed solely for myself. I have never had a wife and children.

Oh, and do you think I’ll have the same fate as yours? Zidane jokes and fills his mug with more red wine. Then his lips taste the sweet beverage.

No, No. I want you to have a beautiful wife and children. I smile at him with my yellow teeth. I touch my long white beard and continue saying, But coming back to the subject− well, I want to tell about the legend of the Black Wolf. I think you should know how it originated in the world.

Zidane puts his mug on the table and he crosses his arms over his chest. His dark eyes gaze at my face. He looks serious and confused at the same time.

This is the young man who has the black wolf’s mark on his back. He has had it since he was a baby.

In the past, many centuries ago, a man went out hunting. He lived in a village where there were quite a lot of black wolves. But those wolves were only animals. Even so, they were enormous. Many people feared those wolves.

The carvings on the cave walls light up our faces.

That man was in the forest and a black wolf crossed his path. The hunter pointed his arrow in the direction of the wolf. Seconds later, the black wolf fell down to the ground, but he was still alive. The hunter walked up to him and knelt down at his side.

Zidane moves on his stone chair as I keep talking.

The hunter removes his heavy knife from his waist and puts it into the wolf’s belly. But the man wasn’t satisfied with the wolf’s death. So he decided to open the wolf’s body with his heavy knife. He pulled out the wolf’s heart and raised it in the direction of the full moon. He said some occult words and then, he ate the wolf’s heart.

Wow, that is very bizarre, Zidane murmurs and glances to the side.

This story hasn’t finished yet, I say. The hunter went back to his village carrying the dead wolf on his back. Everyone in his village was proud of him. He was considered a hero.

What happened after that? Zidane asks me.

Well… I scratch my beard. The hunter married a beautiful young woman seven days after this. After some years they had seven children, or more precisely - seven male children. But twenty-one years later, after his youngest child’s birth, the village people discovered there was a black wolf among them. That black wolf was a man that turned into a wolf every full moon. The village elder discovered that the young man was the youngest child of seven male children in the same family.

Zidane’s facial expression changed. Then the village leader is determined to do something. Every seventh baby that has been born in the same family should be marked with an iron spear, containing the symbol of the black wolf. That away everyone could know that baby was a black wolf and this child should die soon - before completing 277 full moon cycles.

At this moment, Zidane stops and stares ahead. His eyes are full of tears. He feels that he knows this story. He had been denied by his village.

I confess, gazing on Zidane’s face, "After that, The Black Wolf’s Mark legend came to life in every village in the world."

    Chapter 1

Zidane is lying down in bed. At this moment he is in a deep sleep. It is daylight, but he does not see it yet. His deep sleep keeps his eyes firmly closed.

Seconds later, he gives a shrug even with his closed eyes. His forehead creases as he frowns, feeling something strange passing lightly over his shoulder and his neck. Something rough and cold.

Stop it, Amarilis, he says with his eyes still closed. I want to sleep a little more.

But the sensation persists tickling him again and again.

Zidane finally raises his head, opens his eyes and glances back over his left shoulder. At this moment he sees Amarilis sitting at his side. She is staring over at him with her white eyes. But Zidane leaps up on his bed as he becomes afraid with Amarilis’ demeanor. Her behavior seems strange. She looks quite different.

Quickly Zidane sits up in his bed and faces Amarilis. He sees she faces him with her white eyes. Her long hair is loose, going down her back.

Zidane is shirtless. There is a cloth wound up to his waist. He opens his eyes wide as soon as Amarilis’ tongue points out of her mouth. Her tongue is long and slim. It looks like the tongue of a snake.

Amarilis! His hands hold her face gently. He stares at her lips and her tongue moves in and out of her mouth. Zidane stares at Amarilis’ face. He doesn’t believe what he is seeing with his own eyes. Consequently he shakes his head at nothing and stares up at Amarilis’ face again.

Amarilis, what is happening to you? he questions and his hands slide over her pale face.

Amarilis says nothing. She just stares at Zidane’s face, even though she cannot see him.

    Soon Zidane shouts desperately, Murad!

Zidane glances at the walls of the cavern and continues shouting louder. Murad!

At this moment, Murad comes running into the cave. The old man looks a little dizzy. Soon he asks, What is up? Why are you shouting like this?

Murad glances over at Zidane and sees Amarilis sitting up on the stone bed. Zidane remains with his hands on Amarilis’ face and says to Murad, Look at this.

Murad approaches them bit by bit. He stares at Amarilis’ back. Her long, black hair almost reaches the bed’s surface.

Oh my God! Murad exclaims as he gazes over Amarilis’ face and sees her long, thin
